NOT as bad as I'd been led to believes (by andydufresne)
When you go to see a SITCOM made into a full length motion picture you go in expecting to see certain things. Almost all of the people involved int the television show are dead now, but I think all of them would have approved of this. What is the plot? Simple. Nicole Kidman plays Isabella a real witch who wants to leave that behind to be like a mortal. She is cast in the roll of Samantha in a remake of the TV show. It is goofy and silly and nonsensical in places but SO WAS THE TV SHOW! Shirley MC is great as the actress who was a grand actress in past, but placed into a sitcom that doesn't <more>
really showcase her talent. DO NOT expect anything complicated from this.I enjoyed it for what it is. It's light fun. MY main criteria for liking a movie is do I think I got my money's worth and was I anxious for it to end. YES and NO.MANY of the performances are great. At times Nicole looks JUST LIKE Liz Montgomery and there are plenty of still of Liz and video of her to compare during this film. Michael Caine was excellent and Steve Carell is SPOT ON as Uncle Arthur. I mean SPOT ON! I grew up watching this and was anxious to see if they harmed it's memory. They did not. DO NOT expect a message. GO to laugh a lot and be charmed and you'll have fun.
Bewitched is Magical indeed (by thewilkersonfamily)
Just saw this at a sneak preview last night. Will Ferrell and Nicole Kidman brought on awesome performances. This is such a family movie. Yet Will Ferrell still throws in a few adult oriented jokes that my 8 yr old daughter didn't even pick up on. Michael Cane and Shirley McClaine brought a lot to the film for the older generation viewers. All though this is not based on the actual sitcom. Will plays Jack Wyatt a down and out actor who is cast to play Darron on a remake of the sitcom. He wants an unknown actress to play Samantha. He finds her in a bookstore and just by seeing only her <more>
nose thru some books and watching her do her "twitching" decides she is the one to play Samantha. All Isabel wants is a "normal" life. Running from her magical past and trying to change who she really is makes this movie worth seeing. Sometimes just embracing who you really are and taking a chance, is really the only thing to do. I give this movie a ten, ten, ten!!!!!
Remakes are useless. The creative mind is boundless, and in Hollywood lately it seems that those in charge have forgotten this fact: recycled, reused, and retained are three words to describe the current creative talent in Tinsletown.Thank goodness, then, that Bewitched is NOT a remake! In fact, it's hardly a re-imaging. Using the classic sitcom as a FOUNDATION, Bewitched transcends current remake or "romantic-comedy" fare to become a wonderfully entertaining, bright, smart, and deeply enjoyable EXPERIENCE what else is a movie for? .And what a beautiful foundation the sitcom <more>
is. Appearances by Uncle Arthur, Gladys Kravitz, and Aunt Clara suffice any fans of the classic-show, while the fantastic writing and direction by the Ephrons suffices those who crave creativity at the cinema, which is to say the film has its own look, voice, and absolute CHARM.Nicole Kidman plays Isabelle Bigelow, a witch, hoping to shed herself of "instant-gratification" and simply be: in a world as beautiful as real life. Meanwhile, Will Ferrell as Jack Wyatt, a washed-up movie star, attempts to remake the TV show Bewitched for modern times, with the clear goal of finding an unknown actress for Samantha. After spotting Isabelle his goal seems realized, and the two begin to recreate the beloved sitcom. As Isabelle finds it increasingly hard to withhold her magical powers especially dealing with her crush on Jack fantastic humor and charm result.Nicole Kidman is absolutely delicious as Isabelle. She again displays her deep talent by shedding her dramatic persona and appearing fresh, funny, and sophisticated. She proves herself as a treat for the masses AND for artistic-acting lovers. She gives all- she is a movie star and an actress, and such refreshing delight would be hard to come by this summer by ANY actress. She surprises once again. Will Ferrell is altogether hilarious. Providing his classic comedy with a touch of individuality for his role wherein lies his genius he completely satisfies as Wyatt. But Ferrell goes one step further from satisfaction to brilliance with his reinvention of himself into a romantic lead. His "straight-acting" is solid, clear, and trained.Together, Kidman and Ferrell simply light up the screen. Here is a screen-duo that should continue on in the spirit of Hepburn and Tracy. Their undeniable chemistry makes the film most definitely fun to watch. With a magnanimous slew of supporting players, including Michael Caine as Isabelle's father, the legendary Shirley MacLaine as the remake's Endora, Jason Schwartzman as Jack Wyatt's ultra-power, sleaze-bag agent, and a very funny Kristin Chenoweth as Isabelle's neighbor, every second of Bewitched is filled with wonderful comedic energy. And all of this is to thank Nora Ephron, who skillfully crafts a comedy of great-expectations with creativity, style, experience, and fearlessness. Bewtiched is as fun to look at as it is to hear, and it moves like a fine dance, among glittering Los Angelas like you've NEVER seen it in a film . She at the same time pays homage to the original series, creates a new film, and tacks on some heartwarming messages. Thanks to the fabulous pairing and individual pairings of Kidman and Ferrell, a great supporting cast, and fantastic execution can turn a great "foundation" into a great movie, and it doesn't have to be a remake, either.
I like Nora Ephron movies.Perhaps I like her movies because I like romance and I like to laugh. Both romance and laughter are here. I even laughed out loud a few times predicting the laugh that was coming, and she went even a better way.I saw the film in a preview and am avoiding spoilers by using generalities. So here are three generalities: 1- If you like this director you will like this movie. 2- The stars are as good as I've seen them, and very enjoyable. 3- I saw the preview for free. But I plan to pay to see it again, and take my girlfriend with me. When the DVD comes out I will buy <more>
Don't expect to see the original, but expect to be entertained (by Meep999)
I went to watch this movie with a friend this weekend. If you're hoping to see a remake of the original "Bewitched" you'll be disappointed. But if you go looking forward to seeing a movie with references towards the original, I assure you'll get your money's worth.I thought this movie was well played and well written. It was a greatly entertaining movie and I'm sure to watch it again. This is a funny romance/comedy that's sure to pull your heartstrings and leave you touched. Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell played their roles realistically, and as always, left <more>
I saw this movie today, and I enjoyed it. It wasn't completely and utterly amazing, but I did enjoy it a lot. I would definitely see it again.Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrel make a good team. An unexpected match of harmony, but with Nicole playing an almost shy woman who calms down an utterly horrible man, is very sweet. This movie wasn't predictable. I hate predictable movies, but this one, I just didn't know what was going to happen next. Michael Caine was also great. Making a truly delicious character come across on screen. I would have liked to see more of him. The one problem I <more>
had was at the end, when Uncle Arthur suddenly appears out of nowhere. I was extremely confused and I didn't think it was a good way to 'tie the loose ends' of the movie. It was a great disappointment having that as the ending, when such a good movie came before it. Overall, rather lovely and truly delighting.
I had no expectations at all for this and was in fact dreading it more than a bit - not just another rehashed TV show-cum-movie but Will Ferrell too??? no thanks - but went to a screening tonight anyway as it was the last that will be shown at NYC's wonderful but tragically soon-to-be-dusted theater, the Beekman. What a surprise: an absolutely adorable film with no dearth of funny! inside jokes about actors and LA. Shirley MacLaine as Samantha's mother just hilarious; Michael Caine brilliant as ever and Jason Schwartzman who I love, yes good fun. Could not have been happier to have <more>
caught it, even in spite of a couple gooey montages. Cheers to Nora Ephron.
I still can't believe how close-minded people are. ITS A MOVIE! Come on just relax and enjoy! (by tbaa_andrea)
I just finished watching the show, and this is all I can say.1. Cute... 2. Not hilarious- but charmingly funny. Like the original series. Being only 28 I watch the shows in reruns . I don't find it to be hilarious... but I always enjoy the simple cute charm of the series.3. The acting isn't as over the top as everyone says it was. I loved Will Ferrell and Nicole Kidman, they had great Chemistry.4. THIS IS NOT A REMAKE OF THE SERIES!! for crying out loud people it is a movie ABOUT remaking the show, with a bewitched LIKE twist. Its not meant to be compared to the series. Its not <more>
really like the series minus the references and clips from the old show, and the fact that there is a witch trying to be a normal human. Everything else is different. Its more about Isabel and Jack than Samantha and Darren. The making of Bewitched is more of a side story. The remake is the smaller part of the storyline.5. this movie had no extreme violence, no sex, no nudity minus a three second pixelated cencored scene and no F bombs. No real cursing at all. Except a few hexes. FINALLY!! An original idea, lets do a movie that can hold its own using something OTHER than shock value.this show wasn't meant to be the intellectual movie of the year, nor was it meant to be the funniest movie of the season. It was meant to be a cute, romantic, touching comedy. No need to over analyze. Just sit back, relax and smile. that's what we did for the original series, that is what this movie is for. We're not talking about "Oh my God Harry You're a WIZARD" Harry Potter here. We're talking about simple... cute... romantic... touching and just plain charming. While I admit there are some scenes that dragged on and one scene that could have been cut completely to fix that... it was an otherwise enjoyable, sweet, see it with a date, best-friend, parent... kind of movie. I don't have kids yet so It would be up to you to decide if it would be an appropriate movie to take them too. I thought it was OK for 12 and up.Anyway. I gave this movie a strong A-. it wasn't perfect, but I think its been getting a raw deal in reviews. It deserves MUCH better than its getting!! I'll definitely see it again since a friend of mine wants to see it and hasn't yet, and I'll definitely get it on DVD when it comes out!
Nicole Kidman has bewitched me : Oh shut up, I know it is lame, but I had to say that. I love Nicole Kidman, she is such a talented actress and so extraordinarily beautiful. I have never seen her in a comedy before, but she does amazing drama movies. Before I completely lost my mind for Kristen Stewart, I was in love with Nicole Kidman well Kristen was very young when I began to like her - only a year difference - and when you are a teenage kid, you tend to have a crush with older girls . The character she played here could have easily gone into a complete air head or a ditz and could have <more>
been annoying, but she carries it off with so much grace. Most of the time, Will Ferrell can carry off 15 minute skits, but not an entire movie all by himself. Thankfully he does carry it off hilariously here, and the credit must go to the director, Nora Ephron who has directed Julie and Julia, Sleepless In Seattle and the writer of When Harry Met Sally. This was a really entertaining movie which made me sad for Nicole Kidman's character. I normally don't have tears in my eyes while watching a chick flick, but this film made me that sad for Nicole's character.Isabel Bigalow/Samantha Nicole Kidman is a witch who has recently promised herself not to do magic anymore and wants to live a normal life, make a pathetic guy fall in love with her and just enjoy the little things in life. She is quite funny and joyful and lives life as she wants/ But she finds out that living without magic isn't as easy and now and again bends her promise. Jack Wyatt/Darrin Will Ferrell is a famous movie star whose recent films have tanked at the box-office and he is now trying to regain his popularity by remaking an old hit TV show "Bewitched", with an unknown actress who has the magical nose. He spots Isabel at a cafe and begs her to join his TV show and she in turn falls for him. He is conceited, prideful and ignorant, and wants his character to outshine Isabel's in every episode of the show. Nigel Bigalow Michael Caine , her father doesn't approve of her style of living and wants her to revert to her old self. He is kind of a playboy, but when he meets Endora Shirley MacLaine , an old lady who is a famous star of yesteryears, he falls for her. Will Isabel have the life she always wanted or will she be left heartbroken? Steve Carell as Uncle Arthur does an amazing cameo in the climax which is downright hilarious. As I have already told, Nicole Kidman is one funny girl in this movie, I was pulled in by her very endearing performance. The thing she does with her nose is so cute and I loved it. Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine were also good, I liked how she kept a secret till the end. The time reversal scene was very enjoyable. The screenplay is also entertaining and I liked how it made fun of itself and the Hollywood actors who think they are above others because they are so popular. Because of Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell's acting, Nora Ephron's sweet direction, this movie will endear you very much. Go on, give it a try.8/10
