Brilliant gem from WANGO some slight spoilers (by ruairisean)
I originally came to this film because of the lovely Ms Isabelle, the summary was a little off putting. However the film itself kept me with it the entire time, even with the different time-lines going on it had a solid flow. Isabelle was amazing as she tends to be, Tim Doiron as Ty was one of the highlights of the film, his character was just so endearing somehow. April Mullens character was genius, the maniacal nature of her performance added to the theme of the film and the setting, and provided a little levity in an intense scene. So, strong acting, believable characters. Great storyline, <more>
nicely done, kept me guessing all through it. If you like WANGO, April Mullen, Tim Doiron, Christopher Loyd, and the list goes on, watch this film and be glad Isabelle has joined forces with them and that the film will be as popular as the Soska Sisters American Mary. A real plus for Canadian film
i don't know whether its Katherine acting or what but she saves the movie from falling off .the police was just way too dumb in the whole scenario being made look bad .other than that i liked the movie and you will love the end.the whole movie has got twists .some are good and some are way off . my favorite was of course the one in the end .****spoiler alert***** : in which Gwen gets the flashback that she was actually the killer of her lover .she did it by accident .also in the case of waitress getting shot in the beginning it was also by chance but you can blame Cyrus in the sense that <more>
he was the one who taught her how to use the gun but he shows his father figure at the end when he shoots himself in order to save Gwen from going to jail and takes all the blame . i like the message of the movie
I watched this film at the recent Niagara Falls Comic Con. I was instantly drawn into the strange world of Flamingo/Gwen. I don't want to give away the story but it was very engrossing and with enough twists and turns for a top notch ending. The beginning is not the beginning the end is not the end but the beginning. The acting was topnotch with Catherine Isabelle and Christopher Lloyd in a challenging roles. Beautifully filmed in the Niagara area of Ontario on a short film schedule. There is nothing unnecessary in this film. No filler no fluff. I have to commend the filmmakers and <more>
creative team for making and I hope they make many more films like this.
..you know when someone tries to play a psychopathic stonecold killer and everything looks like pretending? nothing to worry about here. the poster gives it no justice, not cheap, not corny. it's stylish and dirty - nice to look at but not staged. the psychotic breaks are beleavable and the flashbacks interesting, not confusing. wasn't sure if she would pull it of, cause from my first impression the storyline, the poster.. it didn't really give me much - but there were no bad parts for me in it, every character fit to the story.a lot of dead bodies, no shortcoming of blood..but <more>
not too much gore. in some episodes of hannibal i was very drawn to the character she played, and i recognized her from American mary - which had a lot more gore to say the least ..sooo..well rounded action-flick with plot-twist and love-driven psychotic avenging angel.
Good movie & very strong performance from Katherine Isabelle (by miller_ray)
88 starts with our main character lost and confused in a diner, and through multiple story threads we find out how she got there and where she is going. That's all I want to say about the story, because the less you know the more I think you'll enjoy the movie.I thought 88 had a very "Memento-ish" feel to it, in that by design the viewer is very disoriented and along the way you gather information along with the main character until the inevitable "aha" moment and climax. I thought the pacing was great, the actors did a terrific job, and while I have no idea what <more>
the budget was for 88 it felt like a major feature film. Speaking of the actors, Katherine Isabelle OWNS this movie. I want to go back and re-watch, but if I'm not mistaken she is in essentially every scene in the movie. Plain and simple, 88 doesn't work if she doesn't nail her role s , and she plays it to perfection. Bottom line, 88 isn't The Godfather or Apocalypse Now, it's not going to win any Oscars or make billions of dollars. But if you're looking for an exciting movie with several WTF moments and a great performance from an under-appreciated star I strongly recommend it.
88 is a smart original Canadian film, words I never thought I would never put in the same sentence. The opening of the film defines "Fugue State" which is a type of amnesia which creates a separate personality, normally triggered by a traumatic event. Gwen Katharine Isabelle has had such an event as her boyfriend has been killed in front of her. She turns into the cold heartless, no filter Flamingo. Flamingo is a killer while Gwen is not. She attempts to unravel what has happened and believes Cyrus Christopher Lloyd killed him.Flamingo in her new personality doesn't <more>
recognize people Gwen knows and Gwen doesn't know people that Flamingo has met. The film is filled with flashbacks. The number "88" is used for everybody's address, but is a reference to the script as to how it loops back and creates a double infinity symbol for the two personality plot line. The time spent as each personality is evenly done. The soundtrack is 180 degrees different between the two personalities. And something I didn't figure out to late was there was a rather lame trigger song "Come Be With Me Love" that would jolt Gwen out of her tough girl Fugue State and back into herself. However, this is not a film for everyone. The flashbacks are at times confusing. The soundtrack is original and could have been better. It swings from a grindhouse film to an indie drama at the drop of a hat.Guide: F-bomb. No sex or nudity.
