Kooky, Laughable, Livid, Ludicrous and Lurid (by Siebert_Tenseven)
I completely enjoyed this film and am looking forward to watching it again. I enjoy Gregg Araki's work because it's always a bit strange, and this film is no exception. Everyone acts a little weird and does a great job of it. A few of the script lines had me laughing out loud. The pacing is stop and go so be prepared for that. In addition, there are some things that might not make sense, so if you like things to be all set up in the correct compartments, forget it. Essentially, a lot of Araki's films are about getting out of the comfort zone. Obviously this creates a lot of <more>
anxiety among motion picture producers and even more so amongst the viewers of his films. The fact that this film exists at all is a testament to the perseverance of a director with a unique skew on the world and the gift of being able to capture it.
A movie made with heart and shailene as usual personifies us!! (by puruagarwal96)
For sure this movie is better than the novel. A very well directed movie. I never mention the story in my reviews because it reduces the thrill and fun of the movie and you then already know that what is expected. I would say that shailene woodley was the perfect pick for this role and as usual has played this role with her heart. Eva green was also good in the movie and other supporting actors played their role perfectly. This movie contains few sex scenes and seducing moments which would not be suitable for the children below 15 years of age. The scenes were shot beautifully and the <more>
storyline for sure will touch your heart. The mother - child relationship is very appropriately exhibited.
NOT THE BRIGHTEST CRAYON IN THE BOX (by nogodnomasters)
Based on a novel by the same name. One day Eve Connor Eva Green disappears. The story centers on her daughter Kat Shailene Woodley who is unaffected by her disappearance. The father Christopher Meloni is upset. The tale takes place during those obscure years between the 80's and 90's when the Depeche Mode empire crumbles and Grunge hasn't taken hold. We get insights into Kat's mind as she has flashbacks when she talks to a psychologist Angela Bassett . She also has two confidants: an obese girl Gabourey Sidibe and a gay teen Mark Indelicato . More insight is provided <more>
by her dreams where her mother appears. Kat, we discover loves sex...not exactly the words she uses. The title of the feature, like Kat's dreams are oozing with symbolism and metaphors, some of which I missed. There is a picture of a blizzard scene in the living room which the camera lands on for a few seconds. I decline to mention my views of the symbolism as it would be a plot spoiler. There is a twist that does have soft clues which I overlooked. Kudos to you if you figure it out.The film was well acted and a must for those who love quirky indie dramas laced with humor.Parental Guidance: F-bomb, sex, nudity Shailene Woodley and NOT Eva Green...perhaps the biggest shocker of the film.
Things can be hidden or locked away, even though they are apparent to some. Some people see or know where a movie or story is going because they see the signs and read them right. I didn't know where this was going and have to admit, I really liked it. And that's after being disappointed by the very generic "Divergent". Both these movies starring Shailene Woodley, who was also in another movie I thought was disappointing, but let's stay with this one.The story might be simple if you think about it, but the adult way it is presented in the way people talk and present <more>
themselves -> nudity included is very sophisticated and mature. It is an approach that is fun to watch and to listen to. The dialog is great, the acting is superb and the story is fitting. It will not be everyones taste, but you can tell fairly early on, if you'll like it or not.
A really well made under-the-radar film (by jtindahouse)
I first stumbled across Shailene Woodley in 2011's 'The Descendants'. I knew nothing about her going in and and yet her performance caught my eye and captivated me. She had a natural charm about her that is becoming rare among today's 'looks based' actresses. The next time I saw her was 2014's 'The Fault in Our Stars' where again she blew me away with how perfectly she captured the charm of her character. Now, in 'White Bird in a Blizzard' she's done it again, carrying a film that needed a little bit of carrying just through the middle. I'm <more>
starting to think she could be a major player over the next few decades in Hollywood. I know I'll be keeping a very close eye on her next career moves. The film itself is actually very good on the whole. I see that it's based on a novel by Laura Kasischke which I haven't read so I am basing my opinion purely on the film. I quite like how it's a mystery thriller, and yet for a large portion of the film the audience aren't even aware there is a mystery or at least not a solvable one . The only negative I could find was that the twist reveal, and in fact the entire end to the film felt extremely rushed and poorly executed. The twist was clever though so this can be forgiven. This is the first Gregg Araki film I have seen but he's impressed me enough to want to see more.
Another hit for independent film (by danica-rizeski)
White Bird in a Blizzard is a highly thrilling, albeit simultaneously slow brewing film with a unique, however quite believable plot line. I think it's a classic, in terms of sticking to the art-house/indie deliverance. The films combination of the rogue, teenage, playful and sexy as well as dark, quirky and tragic themes allows us to use so many of our senses and emotions viewing it. Stand outs in the film would be Shailene Woodley Kat Connors and Eva Green Eve Connors . This film would appeal to most in general although I believe those who's preferences lie in drama, thriller and <more>
earlier award winning film 'The Lovely Bones' WBIAB and The Lovely Bones have many similarities will love it, especially. Highly recommend.
Kat is a 17-year-old girl in the suburbs, growing up in the late 1980s and observing her parents' dysfunctional marriage at close hand while trying to cope with first love, relationships, sex and friendships - all the growing pains that being 17 involves. When her mother disappears one day, the police think she's probably run off, perhaps with a boyfriend; Kat thinks her mother just got so fed up with her boring, empty, perfect-housewife life that she finally left it to find something better. Kat herself doesn't know how she feels about that; truly, she doesn't really feel <more>
much of anything, especially because her mother had recently been so intrusive in her life. Her father seems meek and lost after her mother leaves, but both of them will eventually have to pick up the pieces and go on. If only Kat would stop having those disturbing dreams about where her mother might be....This is really far more of a coming-of-age story than it is anything else; aside from some dream images, there's very little that would fit the term "fantastical," even though I saw it at Montreal's Fantasia Festival. There is some very fine acting, from Eva Green as the mother, Shailene Woodley as Kat, Christopher Meloni as Kat's father and Thomas Jane as a police detective, and both writer/director Gregg Araki from the novel by Laura Kasischke and the cast do a very good job of capturing that confusing stage of adolescence, where one is not quite fully grown up but is certainly not at all a child anymore either. I very much enjoyed the film, even if Fantasia is an odd place to see it!
I am very satisfied with this movie. (by powell-yendi)
This movie starts off slowly. It is in the perspective of a gorgeous teenager who is solely concerned with her boyfriend. When her mom goes missing, she assumes that her mom kept her promise to leave her dad. As she recaps the relationship between her parents, the viewer is compelled to feel sorry for the wimpy father and agree with the teen's apathy towards her aggressive mother. In utter dismissal of her mom's abandonment, the teenager tries to focus on her boyfriend's reduced sexual interest. However, her intuition about her mother's disappearance keeps alerting her through <more>
inexplicable dreams. Then, when the teenager becomes an adult, things get GOOD! At the end, I realized that I really underestimated this movie. I had no idea this movie was going to be this good. I am glad I watched it and I want to see it again in order to catch some clues that I may have missed. The plot twist at the end REALLY caught me off-guard and I am still wondering if there was some hint throughout the movie that I missed. If anyone catches the hints, be sure to post them as spoilers.
Better than I expected. A Twist in the end that surprised me (by Haider-kazmee)
First I'd like to say that the cast was phenomenal. The story is quite simple and believable. Shailene's mom Eva Green finds out that she has no feelings towards her dad, and turns crazy for wanting sexual attention. Then shows flashbacks of when Eva Green's character was normal. Then they show Shailene's character in the present talking to a shrink. There's many dialog's's in this movie, it's kind of like book.I must say I was quite happy when I saw Thomas Jane in this movie, I don't see him much in films. This movie actually reminded me that I need to <more>
talk to people more often . It's rare that a movie can make you change yourself in real life. Some people are just depressed, and are tired of having the same routine everyday. I'd say watch this movie if you want to watch something real, and refreshing. It had me fooled at the end with a disturbing twist.I'd probably watch it again. 8/10 Great!
