Plot: A dark comedy about an eclectic group of strangers invited to a downtown bar by a mutual ex-lover, Nikki Franklyn, a maddeningly sexy, unpredictable and possibly insane young woman who's recently gotten out of prison for murdering her last ex-boyfriend. The party really gets started when Nikki herself arrives, hauling her latest lover and fiancee, the morally challenged lawyer who'd been handling her case. She's mysterious about her intentions and her current and former lovers soon realize they are all caught in one of her brilliant, mischievous mind-games with possible deadly consequences. By the night's end, revenge will be had, new romance will bloom, and Nikki will have delivered on her reputation as the sexy evil genius. Runtime: 85 mins Release Date: 04 Apr 2013
The movie is very cleverly written. Three of Nikki's former lovers are brought together with no clue as to why. Through the sharing of their past experiences with her, they try to piece together her reason for their meeting. It's done in such a way that you are constantly draw possible conclusions and then throwing them out, only to bring them back once you learn something new. The comedy is clever and not overly goofy. The drama helps you connect with some characters while making you nervous about others. It makes for a thrilling mystery that's not too heavy, but still heavy <more>
enough to make it thrilling. I was surprised multiple times while watching this movie. I think that's what I liked the most about it: it wasn't predictable. Definitely a good movie.
Amazing script & a highly entertaining execution. (by easlayton)
This is a great movie. And as film, comics or any media writers/creators will tell you, the hardest scene is a couple of people sitting around a room or a table talking and keeping it interesting. This movie does just that in spades. And it's vastly entertaining. That's my point. If you understand that the practice of making that, people talking for the length of a movie, is the hardest thing to make entertaining, then just know I was fully entertained by this film. The script is brilliant and so is the directing. But take it from this guy; I don't like action movies if <more>
there's no point other than to just watch pretty explosions. I need substance. I need a story. And this has story and humor and a fantastic build up for the end result as well as great character analysis-I hate the main character until his character starts to open up. I hate the female lead until...well...see; I can't spoil that part. You just have to watch it for yourself. People who don't like this sort of movie, this "12 angry men" style of movie, just aren't going to like this film. There's no point in berating it if you aren't into fun, thriller, character driven films. If you're into great dialog, wonderful acting, suspense, "whodunits", Buffy the Vampire Slayer, movies about old friends, movies about old enemies, movies about people with layers, then this movie is for you.
Brilliant, cerebral, funny, engaging; fine acting, fine script. (by suite92)
Zachary arrives at a bar because Nikki asked to meet her there. Miranda joins him at 8:00 pm. They talk, mostly about Nikki. Marvin shows up at 8:30, looking for Zachary and Miranda. The stories about Nikki continue. All three of them had received one sort of wonderful thing or another from Nikki, and all of them had been lied to in different ways.Miranda says that Nikki called her from an insane asylum, where Nikki had been found innocent by reason of insanity of murdering a stalker. They wonder whether any of this was true. Miranda says yes, she had googled Nikki's case, and found <more>
plenty of authentic public records about her legal situation. They discuss Nikki's stalker, Mark, and his public records.Nikki shows up at 9:00, knowing that the three of them have been talking about her the whole time. She tells them Bert will show up next. Bert is her lawyer, lover, and fiancé. The discussions continue, especially about Nikki's arrest for murdering Mark. Mark was her lover after she left Marvin. They were heroin junkies together. Insanity entered in somewhere; she killed Marvin, and did not know it.Bert says that he stays with Nikki because he is certain she has been cured of her mental condition. She now sees that her previous homicidal thoughts toward Marvin and the others were parts of her insanity and have to be let go.The writing here is just brilliant. Nikki uses Marvin, Miranda, and Zachary to help pressure Bert in to accepting a wedding date roughly a year in the future. Also, she wanted Zachary to meet Miranda. This is only the beginning of the film. These smart people who know Nikki have a lot more to do before this encounter is over. Nikki is mightily challenged by Bert, a man who is a 'better liar than I am.' Bert on the other hand, things of Nikki as 'walking Viagra.'The peeling away of layers of story together with re-interpretations of previous statements continues. How does this end? ------Scores-------Cinematography: 10/10 Some of the best low-light photography I've ever seen. Very atmospheric.Sound: 10/10 No problems.Acting: 10/10 Best performance I've ever seen from Michelle Trachtenberg and from Seth Green. Katee Sackhoff, Harold Perrineau, and William Baldwin were great.Screenplay: 10/10 One of the best, tightest scripts I've seen in a long time.
This movie made me happy and post here! (by psycho_anomely)
I have never written a review before and I most probably suck at it, but as the title says IT made me do this. What appealed to me before watching this movie was that 2 actors where in it who I loved from TV shows Buffy and Lost. They performed like I hoped, these being Seth Green and Harrold Perrineau. But I must say that I didn't care much for Michelle Trachtenberg in Buffy, but she was great in this!I'm a sucker for clever, funny, fast and weird conversations and this movie has all that. To me, and here comes a risky statement, this is the kind of stuff and conversations Tarantino <more>
hasn't been able to pull off since Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. Of course this movie doesn't come close to them, it is not as clever, but it sure is fun! And for me it has been a long long time since I enjoyed a movie that was almost all talk.. Pulling Tarantino into this is probably a silly move and making expectations way to high, so don't expect too much OK. And if you can love the characters like I did than I'm sure you'll love this little gem of a movie!
The other guy that reviewed this film as a disappointment is way off the mark in my opinion. The first scene didn't bode well it felt like the plot was going to be predictable so at that point I didn't expect to enjoy it. Luckily it's the only film I had so I watched anyway and despite that first scene the rest of the film was written perfectly and I can see how it drew such an interesting cast.I like mind games especially when they're executed with real intelligence along the lines of what some of the really good Japanese animators can pull off. The lead character in this <more>
certainly managed to provide that and again I have to differ with the other reviewer in that throughout the movie I thought she was getting sexier and sexier, I do love the crazies though. The cast played the parts very well and I was kept guessing until the very end but what impressed me most about this film is that I was left extremely satisfied with the outcome.I think it's a shame this movie has such low votes as I'm not an easy person to please film wise in fact I've avoided linking my google account to IMDb for over a year because I'm paranoid but I had to say something when I saw the bad rap this was getting.Tl;dr If you like intelligent mind f***ing movies/books/animation you'll definitely recommend this to a friend despite the slow start.
What a fun movie to watch and try to figure out what is about to happen! The entire setting until the very end takes place at one table and 'the ladies room' in one bar. The characters are distinct and the conversation is clever and at times mysterious. Just what is Nikki up to?? You will have to see this movie if your are curious. Each actor gives a power performance and their interaction will keep you watching. I do not want to offer up any of the plot line because when I watched this movie I had no idea what it was about. It's one of those flicks in my opinion that makes you <more>
feel like saying - "That was good" at the end. What you think one moment about Nikki will change numerous times during the story! I only gave 9 stars because I found the ending a bit hollow.
Sexy Evil Genius exposes a couple, often forgotten, universal truths. The first: A close shaven Seth Green can pass for a fifteen year old, any day of the week and twice on Sunday. The second: Even absent a billion dollar budget, CGI, 3-D, spectacular shoot-outs, or gratuitous nude scenes, a decent script, coupled with impressive acting is, as always been, damn entertaining.I am content the above paragraph summed up my viewing experience of Sexy Evil Genius, however, the content gods of IMDb demand more input. To comment on the main character, the "genius", was she a manipulative, <more>
severely psychologically damaged individual? Absolutely. Was she someone that I, or any rational person, would wish to share company? No. Did she, and the film, hold my attention? Yes. Was the entire experience worth my time and the few dollars to rent the video. Yes.
Why hasn't this movie gotten more reviews? 11 at the last count! Well, it went straight to DVD, that's why. But that's a shame because it's a corker of a script and deserves a wider audience.A capable cast leads the audience through a twisty turny plot involving the ex-lovers of Nikki, a 'sexy evil genius.' She gathers them together in a bar for mysterious reasons that she baits them with through their meeting... but nothing is as it seems and no-one can be sure whether or not she's telling the truth. Come to think of it, there are questions of 'the <more>
truth' about her ex-lovers too.Key to the story is the question of her sanity, the veracity of which is cleverly shuffled throughout the dialog. What is real and what is imagined... what is believed to have happened and what has actually happened. The state of Nikki's mental health don't call her Nik! would explain her motives but we never know what that is or what they are till the end.The ensemble cast all help create an electric atmosphere but when Katee Sackhoff is let off her leash she steals it.If you enjoyed the intelligent screenplay, brisk pace and edgy atmosphere of Glengarry Glenross then you'll get a pleasant evenings entertainment from this.
"Sexy Evil Genius" is a Comedy/Drama with snappy dialog that moves quickly from scene to scene and keeps one guessing as to the what led up to the opening moments of the film. If you don't like movies that depend on dialog skip this one. It's a fun story and I was entertained throughout. There are some deeper elements to the plot; look for them. The acting was above average to my untrained eye. The directing and editing was well done and the cinematography/lighting were excellent. The audio mixing was clear, and the score a subtle character. I gave the film an 8/10 as it was <more>
