Plot: Psychologist Peter Bower's life is thrown into turmoil when he discovers that the patients he has been seeing are ghosts. Risking his own sanity, Peter delves into his past to uncover a ... Runtime: 90 mins Release Date: 29 Jan 2015
I was fortunate enough to catch Backtrack in Toronto at After Dark. I was so glad I did because its actually one of the most exciting films of its kind that I have seen in the last few years. Adrien Brody's psychologist Peter Bower has his world shattered when he realizes that his patients are not actually alive and are in fact ghosts. These ghosts cause Peter to uncover a terrifying secret from his past, all the while he must deal with the loss of his daughter.I enjoyed going into this film blind, maybe check out the trailer but avoid spoilers at all costs! Backtrack works best when its <more>
mystery slowly unwinds on screen and you find yourself alongside this psychologist as he attempts to uncover the truth. The film comes to a really satisfying conclusion to all its madness too, I haven't been able to get it out of my mind for the last month or so. The performances are absolutely great and really sell the mystery. Adrien Brody is haunting on screen, Sam Neill is a welcome presence and fans of Mad Max will enjoy seeing Bruce Spence show up too. Big winding mysteries usually live and die based on how good their casts are at selling it and these guys do an amazing job. I can't wait to see this one again when its in regular release. Give it a go! With such an intriguing storyline you really can't go wrong.
You don't want to miss this movie (by esteemdancers-1)
If I would take the time to review a movie, especially since I hate composing anything, then you can be assured it is a movie I believe you will more than enjoy. As soon as I read that Adrian Brody starred in the film, well, that was all the hook that I needed to give it a watch. I must admit that the first 10-15 minutes I was wondering if I should leave the theater because the film was a bit too heavy with the glum, depressive and exhausted mood of Brody's character. However, this film jumps into high gear or what I describe as earning a perfect 10 rating just as soon as Brody makes a <more>
connection to what may be the underlying reason he is experiencing symptoms that are over and beyond suffering from depression. In fact it travels into the macabre. Once he makes the connection, hang on to your seat, and make sure it is one where you will feel safe, because it has some intensely frightening scenes. There is no ripper blood and sadistic gore needed to scare you but just a fantastic script. It is a terrific thrill ride where the suspense builds by the minute. You will not be able to know what is coming next. One reviewer said she didn't like the ending. I did like the ending. Give it a watch. Like I said, it is a little slow getting started but so worth the wait. The film is available on Direct T.V. pay per view.
Roteiro nrilhante, atores incríveis e direção iluminada!
The Great Adrien Brody! (by rbnbbn)
I found this movie by accident on a rainy Sunday. I love Adrien Brody and have watched everything I can find with him in it. He can be funny or dramatic. I do not know why he isn't a bigger star. He is a lot better than some that are! This movie allows him to show a wide range of emotions. Backtrack is very creepy. Just when you think you know what's going to happen the movie surprises you again. Brody is so good in this movie. You feel his pain and anguish. It is riveting and scary...a mystery right up to the end. The villain was someone I never suspected. I was really at the edge of <more>
my seat. Well done. We all need more Adrien Brody!
Somehow I missed this when it was released, until I randomly saw it on Amazon today and gave it a watch. Which was lucky, as it's a film not to be missed.Shades of The Sixth Sense, shades of The Machinist, a brooding atmosphere, Hitchcockian twists and turns and a star performance from Adrian Brody. Just superb. It doesn't do anything massively original, but what it does... it does with an assured hand and it's totally engrossing. One of those slow burn films that grabs your attention and never lets go, with a pay off that delivers.I was shouting at the screen at the end, always a <more>
good sign. Unless you're watching it on the bus, obviously.
BACKTRACK 2015 Mystery, thriller, drama. The whole packageA simple plot when you look back at it, But the exquisite story telling that keeps you at the edge of your seat for the whole run time is what really makes it a masterpiece. Also an amazing achievement in giving an atmospheric mood. The tune is creepy but entertaining at the same time. Gotta give credit to adrien brody for an outstanding performance. Alongside with the whole stellar cast. Just wow !!You can't ask for more.Buckle up and enjoy the journey, it's worth it.
A well paced mystery/horror that keeps you hooked till the end. (by augusts-bautra)
Backtrack starts off setting the mood. From the opening credits and first few minutes you know that Peter Bower played by Adrien Brody and his wife, Carol Jenni Baird are regaining their footing in life after some terrible incident.Peter works in some psychiatric capacity, seeing patients. The weather is drab, the routine - taking it's toll, home life is yet in shambles. First cracks start to appear as odd occurrences, then things get progressively more inexplicable and Peter comes to shocking realizations, explanations to which must be sought in his past, back at his home town...It <more>
is rather commendable that Backtrack manages to start off disguising itself as a psychology mystery, but slowly progresses into a cool detective.I was not a fan of the cheap jump-scares, I would have liked Peter's confusion and anxiety communicated differently. I did, however, thoroughly enjoy the ghost story symbolisms of doors that just won't stay shut, pages that just won't burn etc.Cinematography in Backtrack is very well done - colors and lighting always play well with the tone of scenes, especially the dark and shadowy beginning portraying hopelessness and brightness in the end signifying new vitality. The classical score is also to be praised - it works well to accent the continually growing suspense of the story. The unkempt Brody works extremely well as the morally crushed Peter Bower, definitely matured since the 2005s The Jacket, shining in key scenes like "saying her name" and "after confession". Honorable mention to Robin McLeavy's senior constable Barbara Henning, portraying sensible competence and also managing to be the damsel in distress when necessary.Backtrack is not perfect. "Some characters were not developed enough" is a legitimate complaint. "That scene did not make sense/was unnecessary" is also an understandable criticism. Nevertheless, the movie does not bore, nor does it get tripped up by it's own flaws on the way of delivering a convincing mystery that always hangs by the last thread to make sense of it all.8/10, would backtrack again.
I enjoyed this film. It has a Hitchcock feel with paranormal aspects used to get this now middle aged man to the truth of a secret he's buried. You realized he buried it out of self preservation. After the death of psychiatrist Adrian Brody's daughter in an accident, he feels a deep responsibility for her loss. Being unable to help his daughter,it triggers a latent memory of the loss of another young girl.As the story unfolds you realize he probably chose the profession of a psychiatrist because of his past. He had to want to know the why to the question he was probably to frightened <more>
as a boy to talk about. Who would believe him?I don't know if the ghost were truly there or if it all the mind's way of getting the truth out, freeing this man from his past in order to accept the loss he faces in his present life in order to feel free to live a future without his daughter. I felt he believed in someway the secret he kept was "poetic" justice for keeping this grave secret. He lived with the truth that this horrific train accident that happened when he was a boy was his fault in some way, he just had mentally blocked that his part was indirectly related. You can feel the turmoil a child of a serial killer must feel when they realized and carry the secret into adulthood how sick their parent is. It's probably through his becoming a doctor he managed to not become the same type of man. Adrian Brody is perfect for his role because of his animated features he has the ability to display suffering with just an expression. Regardless of the low rating it has received by some, these days if there is no gore, people don't feel it's horror. If you love the old dramatic thrillers that came out before slasher films took over the field you will enjoy this. It does feel slow in the beginning but trust that it is taking you somewhere and every scene serves a purpose in getting you there because it's a very "first-person" drama.
