The movie making involved here is top notch all the way. Can't really say that it's an enjoyable or entertaining movie because it's a tough story to tell. Because it's based on a true story, I'm glad I saw it. If it were fictional, I'd have different expectations for the plot and character development. We're left wondering about certain characters and their backgrounds. But, isn't that the way life is?I've read some harsh viewer reviews on this site and others. Many seem to think the movie is just too weird. They don't want to see a movie about a man <more>
who plays with dolls because he can't deal with reality. All I can say is that the top grossing movie this weekend is about a man who is king of an underwater kingdom and fights crime. Perhaps a lot of people have weird ways of dealing with reality.
There's not that many movies that really show an invisible disability. Disabilities are always seen as a physical disability, ignoring the fact that there are also people who have disabilities and it's not noticeable. I have an invisible disability. You can't tell that I am disabled or not: that's the difference.I found myself relating to Mark because of this fact. Not all disabilities can be seen and you can't tell if someone has one or not. I found myself attached to Marks pain.Confronting the bullies that caused the pain is really hard. Especially if the bullies <more>
actually have caused a traumatic experience: it's really difficult to feel safe afterwards. Welcome to Marwen did an amazing job at showing the ptsd of any tbi enduced problems
This is a really fantastic film about a man struggling with PTSD in a very creative way, and the support he receives from his friends. I made the mistake of reading one critic's review of it before I saw it, which I rarely do, and while the criticism was generally favorable, I took something completely different away from the film. Besides, it's a true story, not a fictional piece that deserves a critique. What happened to Mark Hogancamp was truly criminal. As an added bonus, Eiza González has a small role in it too! :-
Severely underrated, well acted, well produced film (by devilsjustice)
The critics got this film wrong. The only problem with this film is that it was released in the wrong era. If this movie was released in the nineties or early 2000's it would be getting rave reviews. Honestly as one user put it, in 10 years this film will be looked back on fondly. The film is based on the true story of Mark Hogancamp who was brutally assaulted outside a bar for admitting he wore women's heels. He lost his memory of everything that happened before the attack and had to rebuild his life. He could no longer draw, he was an artist and instead used a fictional WW2 village <more>
he created in his backyard using dolls and action figures called Marwencol as a therapeutic outlet. He then parlayed this into an art installation that gained wide acclaim. In the film itself, director Robert Zemekis and Steve Carell craft a moving multifaceted Mark Hogancamp who is unequivocally broken from the assault. In the film he is suffering from extreme anxiety and social dysfunction as a result of the attack and this is represented by the dolls coming to life in extraordinary CGI sequences. As mentioned the film isn't easy to consume. Mark is a flawed human being and is struggling to live in the real world. Steve Carell does an amazing job of bringing this to life in a nuanced fashion but it is uncomfortable, especially in an age where the male gaze is vilified. The women exist to serve Hoagie. They are Mark's only tangible connection to the world. This is done purposely however and it works within the context of this film. The film is after all, about Mark and how he struggles with the aftermath of the attack and how to find his place in the world. While Mark's interactions with the women of Marwen and their real world counterparts was criticized, I think that the discomfort that these interactions produce is the mark of a good film. Mark is recovering from a brutal attack and has no connection to the real world and how to navigate relationships outside of his dolls. His demons come to life and are dealt with in the fictional village of Marwen. Him learning to get on with his life and divest himself from his fantasy is one of the key themes of the film. Mark's not perfect. He's creepy at times but that is OK. He's human and is recovering from a terrible attack.I really enjoyed this film, it's obvious that great care went into crafting this film and all the actors and actresses did a phenomenal job and the CGI scenes are breathtaking. Some criticisms are the sometimes questionable dialogue in the CGI scenes. I would also have liked to see more of the attack that left Mark in this condition and the men who did it, especially as they were also represented in his fictional village as Nazi soldiers. The editing was good for the most part but a few scenes could have done with some trimming. All in all this is a severely underrated film. Its originality is its weakness in the modern film goers eyes as it doesn't check the boxes of modern film-making. It's not a superhero film, not a sequel and doesn't actively beat you over the head with a socio-political agenda. It's a film that brings you into the broken world of a flawed man and asks you to live his recovery with him warts and all. This film is definitely worth a watch but is sadly going to be buried under the negative press. In a world of sequels and superheros, originality is a lost art but the team behind Welcome to Marwen get kudos for trying something different.
I believe that some of the negative critiques are fueled by folks who are afraid of some of the emotional material being triggered in themselves, but are most likely not aware of this dynamic. Basically if you are comfortable with feeling everything that comes up for you when watching this film, you might find it as rich and deeply touching as I did. Superb acting andt ruely original!
Amazing movie (by gdennisvideo)
Don't listen to any reviews and please watch this movie. If you watch the trailer you know exactly what you are getting into. This movie did not disappoint me! Touching story, great acting and flawless execution from a masterful director. Highly recommended.
See For Yourself (by jeffellis92)
I don't understand why the reviews are so bad. This is an original, unique story based on real events that isn't a remake or a superhero movie that I wouldn't have known about were it not for this film. I also liked the animation used to tell Mark's story. Sure, some of the dialogue wasn't great and the writing could have been better, but it didn't ruin the experience for me, or the rest of my life for that matter. Anyway, don't take my word for it or anyone else's, see for yourself because movies like this are rare nowadays.
The critics got it wrong (by j_slovak)
The most original film I've seen in years. On top of that, basing this on a true story, they didn't feel the need to hollywoodise the lead character, instead keeping him intact with all his quirks, insecurities & awkwardness. The tea scene with Carrell & Leslie Mann is probably the most awkward thing I've seen since the English office series & it works so well. The doll sequences are spectacular, if a little too dominant of the film in the first half, but it's a minor quibble for what is very original, heart breaking yet comedic viewing. Well worth the price of <more>
This movie was not easy for everyone to understand. If you have never suffered from PTSD then you might not get it, but I have and I understood it completely. This is an eye opener for others because two things happened that I noticed: 1. He had serious PTSD. When things happened that he associated with his attack the Nazi tattoo he ran feverishly to get away from the situation. Not everyone reacts this way. 2. His way of interacting with others was through fantasy and he really lived there way too much. But, he found it much easier to live in his fantasy world than the real one. I think <more>
this film would be a great way to introduce others to the effects of PTSD. I feel this it would be a good to help Veterans like me to identify what is happening in their lives. I love the way he intertwined live action with the doll action. Very creative. People go out and watch this movie. Support this visionary and get his message out to everyone. That the effects of PTSD can and does happen to a wide range of people under a variety of circumstances. Not just military people. Although everyone reacts in different ways to PTSD try to understand that these are still people who need help and this movie is one way to help them realize that.
