This is a bonecrushing and awesome movie (by soetakillar)
Its a great movie and it does what it was supposed to. It hurts, its dirty, its psychotic. We are supposed to feel the movie in a certain way, not make our "own" out of it. I found some of the scenes annoying but i understood it and felt it. The metallic, dirty, cold and the disgusting perversion of having your mind "toyed" with, is something that stains the entire movie, and i love it.The intro if the movie was something of the most difficult i have ever watched, and i didn't really think that i would be able to finish, but i did, and so i had to make my first review <more>
ever here on IMDb.The fighting was extremely good, i could almost feel that pain, throwing you in to walls and breaking stuff with your spine. Its not supposed to be a Jet Li spectacular ninjutsu fighting flick. Its military snapping bones and crushing lungs. With a taste of Bourne joint snapping. For me this was a 10/10 i felt this movie down to the bone...
Great action flick and very underrated (by gsweetinnn)
I am looking at some of these views like are you serious. What you must understand going into this movie is that Jean-Claude isn't a young and upcoming action hero anymore. This movie is basically used to pass the torch to Scott Adkins. Also the plot isn't rocket science. They actually explain some of the more confusing topics better in this movie. Scott Adkins makes a great lead and the acting in general is well done. Jean and Dolph have minor roles, yet they leave their mark on the film. The action is also great. The fight scenes are well drawn out. I don't understand why people <more>
are calling this a B-list movie. Just because the budget wasn't that big. The action and gore all look realistic. SO I did not see any B-list material here. I really enjoyed this unique take on the universal soldier. The torch has been passed to Steven Adkins and that is something fans should understand.Overall: This was a great action flick that holds your interest. There are very few slow moments and the filming is very cool. A very well done action flick.
twin peaks vs hostel vs terminator 2 lol (by dangermous)
I gave this a 9 just because it surprised me so much. It's prob more of a 6 or 7 out of 10! Quite a few people gave bad reviews because it wasn't like the first film or people have very low expectations because all the other sequels were so dire.I would like to offer an opinion on the film that I believe is not made bias by preconceptions.JCVD only plays a bit part really as does Dolph lungren this is basically a Scott Adkins film. He is by far superior to both those guys so that is not a problem.Right from the start this film was dark. The director used chilling music similar to <more>
terminator 2 music to keep us on edge throughout the film. There wasn't much character development or story telling going on other than what was needed to take us from one violent bone crunching scene to the next!! Going by the other reviews I would say a lot of people didn't understand the film and just found it strange....... Common guys it's not that fu%&king complicated! This film clearly has no basis in reality but there is an explanation for everything if you know the unisol story. All I will say is that the good guy was actually sent by the bad guys. The bad guy was really the good guy but got it anyway because the good/bad guy was so awesome. The good/bad guy then takes over the cause of the bad guy who was really the good guy!!!!!!!! Surely you know what I mean...........I will look out for the director of this show as he has a good eye for the dark side. The scenes were well put together. The fighting scenes were bone crunching, bloody and brutal mainly because the unisols can take a lot of damage and heal. The unisols are more advanced than the original and don't need chilling down etc. For those who say this shouldn't have been so dark all I will say is that these dudes are basically killing machines brought back from the dead what did you expect! In summary this is better than the first one even as long as you can understand it Scott Adkins is surely the king of action films now. He is awesome not in a boy crush kind of way
I REALLY LOVED this movie. The vibe was just so different compared to most action movies that come out...and it looked 100% theatrical to me. Looked great in HD too. I can't believe Hyams can churn out these movies with such small budgets. The slow burn that lead to all the action scenes was perfect for the tone of the film. Once the action starts, we are treated to INSANELY VIOLENT and BRUTAL fight pieces which are masterfully executed. My main flaw was the overuse of slow mo in the climax tracking shots. It was still bad ass but it would have packed a bigger punch without it. I knew not <more>
to expect a traditional Unisol movie so that aspect didn't ruin anything for me...and honestly, I like Hyams trying new things instead of just making the same movie over and over again like most big Hollywood directors do. He knew he only had a little money to use and he wanted to create something really special with it...and I think he succeeded admirably. The first Unisol will always be my favorite but DOR slightly edges out Regeneration for me because of the unsettling Horror/Noir atmosphere. Just as how Regeneration was my favorite action movie of the 2010, I think DOR will me my favorite of 2012...and both movies came out the same year as an Expendables movie and destroyed them both. 4.25/5
A really well produced action flick (by etheesdad)
For those of us who were around when Lundgren and Van Damme were a big deal, Universal Soldier was kind of a b-movie classic in the sense that it featured both personalities and had great sci-fi / fighting / action content. This time around, the film revolves around a younger star, Adkins. The story begins with Adkins' character witnessing the execution of his family, and then waking from a coma with only this memory. The film progresses from this point, and the viewer is engaged by John learning about the events that lead to his family's death. What could have been another formulaic <more>
rehash of a well-worn movie format is actually a very engaging modern rendition, using the original story as a launching point for an intriguing, new narrative. I was surprised by the production quality of this film from the outset. The pacing, the way shots are framed, the slow and deliberate way the scenes are put together is reminiscent of some of the best moments of the Terminator series. Great action sequences, but its the artful way its all shot that actually makes for really quality viewing. I was impressed by Adkins performance. This is a fully-fledged action guy who can pull off some pretty convincing character portrayal. In all respects I thoroughly enjoyed this film. If you're a fan of the original, or liked the Terminator series, you will probably appreciate what's been done here. This is, by far, the best action flick I have seen in a very long time.
AN ACTION PACKED DARK & TWISTED THRILLER (by lukem-52760)
Universal Soldier: Day Of Reckoning is a fantastic action packed Thriller, this is probably the best film in the "Universal Soldier" franchise!!! Each entry in this very unique sci-fi series are so different & that's why it's such a cool & interesting franchise."Day of Reckoning" is such a unique departure from all the other films, it plays out at times like a trippy Horror film, this is a very dark entry & the beginning is scary & shocking & this time the main lead hero isn't "Van Damme" but it's the Awesome "Scott <more>
Adkins" who is by now a an action star legend in his own right, he's starred in so many straight to dvd action films & big cinema films that he's up there with other British action stars such as "Jason Statham" but isn't as well known yet i don't think? "Scott Adkins" is excellent in this movie, he's solid, tough, gritty & brutal as hell, he makes a superb action hero, he has a complicated story we find out as "John" & he goes through hell & fights his a## off at every turn, This movie is about his "John" character finding out about his real past & who he really is, it's a dark twisted tale. Action & franchise legend "Van Damme" is back but this time he's so far away from the hero we know from the series "Luc Deveraux" he's changed & is in a very dark place & has become extremely dangerous to everyone!!! "Van damme" plays this new role/version or transformation of his iconic role really well & comes accross like a cold blooded merciless psycho, he's actually pretty scary!!! Other franchise star "Lundgren" is also back & is still a savage killing machine & does some amazing action scenes & gives an evil sinister performance, the three main action leads are excellent. The direction is excellent by Visionary director "John Hyams" who has taken the franchise in a totally exciting & unique way that each entry he's made he's made two has been totally different & totally amazing action films, there's a dangerous & dark mood & the action is sharp, bloody & brutal, his other Universal Soldier film "Regeneration" was also excellent different & then came "Reckoning" & changed the franchise even more, he's obviously a great Action Thriller director & i will check out his other films in the future!!!This is a fast paced, action packed, bloody & ferocious sci-fi Horror action Thriller made by an Awesome director with a bunch of Action legends!!! This movie got me interested in SCOTT ADKINS!!!
Great in parts, but sometimes too slow (by MyNameIsMARTHA)
Just the basic story: Scott Adkins awakes in hospital after he dreams about JCVD and some guys in black uniforms kill his wife and daughter. He is then approached by some sort of government agent and starts to search for the killer of his family but it is more difficult than it seems. To be completely honest: I don't think I got the story completely. It includes clones, implanted memories and some twists you wouldn't really expect from a movie like this. This isn't really like the first Universal Soldier funny , this is actually pretty grim and dry and compared to <more>
"Regeneration" it has a way more complex story and clear lead actor this time: Scott Adkins. The first scene is actually a first-person one take, like in an ego shooter. It's a gimmick and I'm not really a fan of this, but it isn't bad at all. It's also raw and brutal as Scott gets beat up by a crowbar and then his wife is killed by a head shot with lots of blood splattering around The death of his daughter isn't shown . The "Eastern block industrial" feeling is gone, this is rural America - and it's for the better. Of course there aren't any big sets like in The Expendables. This time there's also nudity. A brothel for the Universal Soldiers where Andrei Arlovski is wrecking some havoc and a strip club. All this is told with various "experimental" techniques. Strange sounds, flashbacks in which, for example, his daughter appears or his mirror image turns into Van Damme and so on. It's a little bit TOO ambitious for a movie like this. It wants to be deep, David Lynch-like, and, while I appreciate the intention of going away from the simple story of Regeneration the "arthouse approach" doesn't really fit. Scott Adkins also simply isn't a good actor to pull that off. And he still lacks the presence of the old action heroes.Well, yes, the actors. They are horrible. With the exception of Van Damme whose performance as the leader of the rogue Universal Soldier is pretty good and is mysterious presence is definitely something. Dolph finally channels the Andrew Scott from the first movie again, at least, a little bit, and he actually has the only funny line in the movie - "That's the spirit, soldier". What he says when he gets a machete into his arm. You could pretty much picture that in the first movie. Yes, in the movie is serious. No funny one-liners. The only funny thing are the splatter scenes. The movie has lots of it. Adkins loses his fingers, Arlovski half of his foot. Lots of head shots, even an old grandmother gets one, the brothel whores are mercilessly slaughtered. And now to the good things. I mean the really good things. The action scenes. While, I admit it, the first part of the movie is a little bit slow and tries to tell the story as mysterious as possible, it is from time to time pushed by some little action scenes. These are really well-shot, without fast cuts, quite the opposite, slow-mo is used. For what they are small scale scenes in a movie with a low budget they are really top-notch. They don't have large set pieces but that is compensates by the violence. Then there is a car chase which is the only action scene that I found a little bit average. It's really nothing special, the one in Regeneration was much better. But of course, the whole scene leads right into a nice battle between Adkins and Arlovski where the beat each other with baseball bats, dumbbells and whatever.Still, all this doesn't make up for the lengths in the beginning. To be honest, if the movie would have went on like that I would have been a little bit disappointed. But then it comes. The showdown is better than anything seen in THE EXPENDABLES I or II and whatever. Really. I cannot think of many action movies that have such an awesome final act where everything just gets bigger and bigger and culminates into two "boss battles". The whole things begins with a minute-long one take where Adkins wrecks havoc and kills UniSols left and there without the movie having a cut. After the disappointing "Dragon Eyes" John Hyams redeems himself and showed that the great action from Regeneration wasn't just a lucky punch. He can also write, although perhaps next time he should get some help. I hope that in the near future he can at least rise enough to take charge of a movie with Jason Statham and his typical production values.I've decided to give this movie a 8/10 because of the great climax.
Let me just say that this is in fact the best Universal Soldier movie (by Haider-kazmee)
Adrenaline Rush....I just wish they wouldn't have used the title Universal Soldier. I think the title Super Soldiers would've been way better because you don't really need to watch the previous films at all. Apparently the director changed the whole direction of this film the way it is suppose to be..I've seen all of the best and worst action movies from around the world and I was never excited about a Hollywood fight scene, because of the cuts and seizure effect.I was blown away that the fight scene couldn't have been more realistic. This movie is up next to THE Raid ...In <more>
conclusion this will be the best action movie of the year that nobody saw because of the limited release. Must watch!!! Big surprise..
There's plenty of gruesome violence, sex and nudity for any B movie lover and it was filmed in 3D ! (by Hellmant)
'UNIVERSAL SOLDIER: DAY OF RECKONING': Four Stars Out of Five The fourth film in the 'UNIVERSAL SOLDIER' franchise comes 20 years after the 1992 cult classic original, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren! Both Van Damme and Lundgren reprise their roles from the original film in this one Van Damme for the fourth time and Lundgren for his third . Except Van Damme plays the antagonist rather than the hero for the first time in this chapter and rising martial arts star Scott Adkins now stars as the franchise's leading man action hero. UFC champion Andrei <more>
'The Pitbull' Arlovski returns to the series once again after co-starring in the third chapter 'UNIVERSAL SOLDIER: REGENERATION' and John Hyams who also directed the third installment once again directs. It was written by Hyams, Moshe Diamant, Doug Magnuson and Jon Greenhalgh and revolves around Luc Deveraux Van Damme and Andrew Scott Lundgren now leading an army of Unisols out for revenge against the government that controlled them. Adkins stars as a man who lost his family to a home invasion by Unisols and wants revenge against the army of genetically modified soldiers. If you're a fan of the series you're sure to enjoy this chapter as well.Adkins plays John, a man who awakens from a coma after being brutally beaten by Unisols, lead by Luc Deveraux Van Damme , in a home invasion. His wife and daughter were murdered, at least that's what government agents tell him, but nothing is as it seems we soon find out . John of course wants revenge on Deveraux. Deveraux has now teamed with his nemesis from the other films Andrew Scott Lundgren and is leading an army of Universal Soldiers while attempting to free them from government control and the lies they've been taught. Unisol Magnus Arlovski is 'liberated' by Deveraux and Scott and sent on a mission to track down John and stop him before he thwarts their whole rebellion. Once John remembers the fighting skills he's been taught the action and chaos really kicks into high gear! I was a big fan of Van Damme as a kid and really enjoyed all his early movies. The original 'UNIVERSAL SOLDIER' is one of my all time favorites. It's first sequel not counting the made for cable TV movies he wasn't in 'UNIVERSAL SOLDIER: THE RETURN' was pretty bad but once Hyams took over the series with 'REGENERATION' the franchise really got cool again. This chapter and 'REGENERATION' ignore the events of the second film; it's now considered it's own story in an alternate universe sort of like the 'HIGHLANDER' franchise disowned 'HIGHLANDER II: THE QUICKENING' after fans despised it . I haven't seen the two made for cable movies which are supposed to be horrible as well but not counting those or the first theatrical sequel the series is a pretty badass action franchise. I really like the direction Hyams has taken the series and he's definitely a skilled action director. Adkins is also an awesome action movie star and an amazing martial artist. He'll definitely be a big star in direct to video B action films, following in Van Damme's footsteps who he grew up idolizing, along with Bruce Lee . The fight scenes are great and the action is exhilarating. There's plenty of gruesome violence, sex and nudity for any B movie lover and it was filmed in 3D . If you like these movies for the most part you'll probably love this installment as well.Watch our movie review show 'MOVIE TALK' at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v Xh674mS5vTo
