Universal Soldier II: The Review (by Imradyourenot)
Superior Belgian acting combined with an ingenious Hollywood script makes for a superb movie-going experience. Jean-Claude Van Damme is back, in this outstanding sequel to Universal Soldier. This movie has everything: rising conflicts, an intense climax, and a no-nonsense denouement. It has an attractive, Belgian born hero, who gets right to killin' and doesn't waste the viewers' time with wit, correct grammar, or clear, understandable English. It has a suppressed, perhaps even dubious, romance between the two lead characters, so as to keep us wondering when they will <more>
climactically embrace. I often found myself on the edge of my seat, clinching the arm rests in anxious anticipation, crying aloud to the character "Just kiss her, damn it!" The movie has the audience-demanded, token movie complication of a best friend turned into bad Sci-borg, who becomes a threat to our protagonist and must be eliminated but miraculously comes back at the end to save our protagonist when our hero faces certain death! The "bad" guys though I realize this is a passe, barbaric description, and that such distinctions are merely a matter of perspective and it is entirely non-PC in this postmodern day and age were completely convincing in that they made me believe they wanted to take over the world and kill everybody. It has brilliant comic relief. For example, when one antagonist would be foiled in his mission, he would frustratingly utter about the protagonist, "Boy, I really hate that guy." Throughout the movie it became funnier each time he said it, until, finally, about the seventh time he said it, I was rolling in the movie isles. It also has unpredictable twists and turns, for example, I never expected for the bad guys to kid-nap the hero's daughter all the way up until the point when the movie established that the hero had a daughter I was completely taken off guard! . The intensity of this movie is evident when the opening scene takes us through a room filled with every hazardous chemical known to man, which are contained in small tanks with such terrifying, esoteric technical labels as "acid". This is ingenious symbolism interwoven into the film by the director that represents the danger and high stakes involved. It communicates, "This movie is bad A!" The writers obviously performed countless hours of meticulous, in-depth research in order to portray mankind's most advanced, high-tech recent developments in AI and computer technology or at least they heard about someone else whose cousin knew some lady whose husband did do such research. Either way, it shows, and they deserve the credit. The movie obviously brings up pertinent issues and moral dilemmas dealing with our computer age and combines this with the originality of its warning, to wit, someday your computer is going to go bad and decide to annihilate mankind. This unsettling realization has certainly made this reviewer a believer, and from now on I'm going to keep a closer eye on my computer. One can only hope that this movie has the box office success that it deserves, so that Hollywood won't hesitate in churning out even more classics of this sort fortunately, whether it is a success at the box office or not, Hollywood knows what is great movie making and I don't think low box office sales will stop them from continuing to make great films like this . I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, as did my friend who is a scatologist, who said, "It is one of the most interesting specimens I've ever encountered!" Such a sublime, intellectually stimulating work deserves nothing less than 5 out of 5 stars! Rod 'n Reel Reviews
Universal Soldier: The Return! (by Movie Nuttball)
Universal Soldier: The Return is a good action packed sequel film that casts Jean-Claude Van Damme, Bill Goldberg, Michael Jai White, Heidi Schanz, Xander Berkeley, Kiana Tom, and Daniel von Bargen. The acting by all of these actors is very good. Van Damme was very good in the film as always. White and Berkeley were very good in this film, arguably their best performances. Bill Goldberg was excellent in this film. The action is really awesome and the fight scenes are really exciting. The film isn't as graphic as the prequel but its violent none the less! The music by Don Davis is good. <more>
This is a good and thrilling film. If you like Jean-Claude Van Damme, Bill Goldberg, Michael Jai White, and the rest of the cast I've mentioned above and exciting non-stop action films then I Strongly recommend this film!
I like the movie because all the action that is going on. I just had to keep turning it down on some parts. I got the DVD. I can not stop watching it. It is so great that I can't even hardly explain. It is my all time favorite movie. I would always rate it a ten. I wish there is more movies like this one!! The special effects are great. It has the best actors in it to me. Even though I wasn't born in 99 I still like it. I caught it on TV and had to watch it for the millionth time. Can not get enough of Unverisal Solider: The Return!!! I tell people after I watch it the next day, then <more>
they watch it. It is so great that you can not get enough of it. I always have dreams about it after I watch it. I love every song in it! My favorite song from it is Chaos by Skold. I downloaded it on my phone, laptop, computer, and tablet. I love the actor who play Hillary Deveraux, Karis Paige Bryant. Spoiler Alert: S.E.T.H. discovers that the Universal Soldier program is scheduled to be shut down because of budget cuts, it takes action to protect itself. That is when everything goes haywire.
Warning!Only for Sci-Fi Action fanatics!Warning..... (by kenandraf)
Bad sci-fi martial arts/action movie that was intended to sell only to the most ardent Sci-fi/martail arts-action fanatics who will most likely delight in the many good fight choreography scenes showcased here. The production quality was bad although there are worst. The flow of the movie was to the point and at least did not pretend to be something it is not.For an audience who like energetic cyber/action Sci-fi feel injectd with loud cyber rock type jams, this movie will hook you up.There are not too many movies that feature this type of unique artistic combo ala Japanese action sci-fi Anime <more>
or the Warner Bros. BATMAN BEYOND TV series ,so this one will be appreciated by it's followers.I for one go for this type of combo and hope more like these are released. But if one is like most people out there who do not like precition and to the point Testosterone Hong Kong/Tokyo style martial-art choreography mixed in with loud/fast energetic cyber rock or cyber rock type background music blasting away while all mixed into the weird sci-fi story flow and a dash of comic humor here and there too ,do not,I repeat,do not expect to like this one as it is only for a TARGET AUDIENCE.I am surprised this movie made it thru the big screen circuit. This type formula movies are usually only for straight to video and cable TV markets where they rake in a lot of profits later on.May be Van Damme's second best movie after Universal Soldier as of this writing.I hope he makes more movies of better quality.I like his new mature/hardened look in this movie......
When I 1st saw this I didn't have high expectations for the film but this movie was so good it exceeded expectations.Lets get real: this movie is slammed because these days guys like Van Damme get canned even if they are entertaining. I've been watching Van Damme movies since I was 4 and this is is one of his best. The plot is rushed but this is ridiculous fun to watch.Goldberg has his moments and isn't that bad considering he was a fulltime wrestler.Another treat for action fans:there's a fight between Van Damme and Micheal Jai White. By the way: Van damme isn't that bad <more>
of an actor when you look past his accent. The fight scenes are so-so.
Why does everyone hate this movie? (by rchrdshelt)
I must say when I first saw this movie I'd only seen bits of the first one and hadn't seen the 2nd or 3rd which are made for TV, so didn't really get the overall plot although I knew this one basically follows on from the 1st as it features Van Damme whilst the 2nd and 3rd don't, so I thought thats good enough for me.Anyway, I sat down and watched it and must say I was very, very impressed. Even though it barely lasts, it goes on for just over an hour , I must say some of the action in this movie is truly spectacular and right up there with some of the best i've ever <more>
seen, and believe me I've seen a hell of a lot of action movies even though i'm only 16. In this movie there are some brilliant fights, gun fights, explosions especially the one at the very end and chases. Also Bill Goldberg is brilliant in his movie debut as the main Unisol, and Van-Damme although slightly beginning to fade is still preety much on top throughout. Heidi Schanz is also likable as his unlikely sidekick. I even chuckled at one or two rare comedy scenes in the movie. The plot is a bit weird and virtually the whole movie takes place over the space of one night, but if you want to watch a movie and be entertained or your a die-hard action fan, then this is the one for you. I found out on here that this movie was in the bottom 100 on IMDb, which is very unfair because as far as i'm concerned because there isun't a huge amount wrong with this movie and I've seen way worst movies than this. Actually, this isun't a bad movie at all.So I'm going to give this movie and 8 out of 10 because I was never bored, thoroughly entertained and it had some truly spectacular action scenes. My only complaint would be it being a little too short and a slightly better background on Van-Damme's character.
I don't get people's complaints on this film. It wasn't suppose to be Oscar worthy. It's an action film & a very good one. JCVD is no DeNiro but he's a lot better than people give him credit for! From start to finish we got great action. The fight scene w/Van Damme & Michael Jai White was nicely shot, well paced & exciting. It was one of the best fights scenes ever filmed. Goldberg did a good job for a novice. I saw this w/my girlfriend, & she hates action films but she liked this movie especially White & so did the sold out crowd we watched it with. <more>
Great action movie, superior sequel & a fun ride. 8/10
This is the best action movie of the year and one of the best action movies all the time. Actually, the characters are one-dimensional and plot is a little bit simple. but despite of all these, Universal Soldier: The Return is a very-well made movie and worth seeing. fight and explosion scenes are awesome. Especially, last fight between Van Damme and Jai White is GREAT! If you want to see "a true action film", this movie will satisfy you.
