a great, but predictably underrated film (by robtromp)
This is one of those films that was obviously a labor of love for many of the folks involved. There are some incredible performances, and a great and believable story here. It's the kind of story that deserves to be a cherished bedtime story of the modern age - one of knights in tarnished armor who do what is within their power to resist the relentless pull of greed, selfishness, and fear - and surprisingly live to tell the tale, on a broadcast network no less! One only prays the hope conveyed here is realistic.I am amazed that reviews of under 10 lines are not accepted. It seems that <more>
IMDb has decreed that brevity is not the soul of wit, and only when we drone on and on and on about our particular spin can we be deemed worthy of immortalization in their hallowed database. Thus having achieved immortality, I bid thee, "Adieu".
The movie is underrated, maybe you have seen some moments similar to this in other movies, but this movie is trying to WAKE US->MAKE US->LEAD US- >HELP US understand that privatization should be limited and some things can be bought but not all are for sale. Even in my place there had been moves to Privatise Water, it hasn't been successful yet Kerala,India . And hope it doesn't end up that way. This movie had all the potentials to gain stardom, but might have been brought down and not given much importance by huge profit makers from natural resources. Andy Garcia and <more>
Whittaker has shown great talents and even the Kevin's character I liked when he flipped sides, that was an awesome take and never expected such a twist. Hope movies like this gets more appreciation and more fame in the future.
I have to wonder why good movies get such poor reviews (by cyorktoo)
I enjoy a well-written, well-directed and well-acted movie. This is one.It takes us into a world that we are estranged much too often and it does it with grace and passion.Unfortunately, its lack of distribution and acknowledgment of its kind, speaks volumes for the world we live in.I gave it a ten and wonder why such good movies get such poor reviews and little distribution. Where are the small movie houses that were willing to show films of quality and substance? Now we have corporations, computers and data showing the safest and most agreeable propaganda.
An all-star cast (by santangelo-373-192139)
This is the best picture Damian Lee has ever made! It deals with a very current and important world issue. The gunfire and violence is not for the faint of heart, although crucial to demonstrate one of our many global issues. A very believable connection between Eva Langoria and Forest Whitaker while Lara Daans plays the role of the "cast aside spouse" with grace and poise. Kim Coates never disappoints and Andy Garcia is great eye candy as usual! The unfortunate performance is that of Deborah Kara Unger. She appears zombie-like throughout the whole film and I am not sure what the <more>
name of that acting technique was but it did not work. Other than that, this film has its' finger on the pulse of the environmental issues in South America. Anyone who cares about our planet should see this film.
I just saw this movie and thoroughly enjoyed it. And, yes. I agree with the lead review that it WAS formulaic. But i STILL found it enjoyable. If for no other reason than the political/industrial plot at the center of it all. I hope I NEVER lose interest in seeing a movie of this sort, a movie with 'a message'. It's more than funny that people would actually review this as they would a 'regular' movie. alTHOUGH, once again, I feel it worked on both levels. As a piece of entertainment and as an informative piece. I'm pretty sure the makers of the film did it that way to <more>
make the message more digestible/palatable. Especially considering that one of them is Garcia, born in Cuba. I gave it a 9 I would've usually given it an 8, relative to other movies. Still...i try to see anything with a 6.5 rating or above... just so you understand that this is still a high mark to balance out all of the people who, for whatever reason/s, didn't seem to enjoy it as much as i did... btw people. if you have trouble accepting the premise of this movie then i advise you to read howard zinn's 'a people's history of the u.s.' good night and good luck.
I've read most reviews here and can only think of one possibility: people don't believe, cause it's too sad. Well, on this matter water privatizing and locals harmed we have another 2 good examples: 1. An Oliver Stone documentary about politics in South America, and 2. A James Bond movie in which the main villain is doing almost the same thing. This movie was based upon real facts. When you're an ocean away from those stuff, the matter seems little. But as a South American, I must say that corporations buying governments causing death and suffering onto an entire nation is <more>
not a recent problem. Neither is the participation or initiative of G5 countries' governments.Well, to the movie: great information, good production despite its budget, awesome cast, great lines and balance between action and dialogues. I truly recommend it!PS: a good fellow wrote that the story is about something happening in some African country, but no, it's Ecuador - South America. Above Brazil, below Caribbean islands.
A movie that has the possibility to change things. Needs to be seen but plays like a story from 60 Minutes. I say B+ (by cosmo_tiger)
"When you can't affect change from within, I mean positive change, you have an obligation if you're at all conscious to get out and try other things." Jack Begosian Garcia is a former CIA operative who is now a talk show host talking about important issues. Bruce Swinton Coates is the head of a large corporation who has just found out about a huge problem with his company and a local African community. When his sister wants him to tell the truth he fights her and she hires Jack to go in and expose what is going on in the country. This is a very important movie that <more>
should be seen by more people then will actually see it. Very engrossing and informative and worth seeing. The only real problem I have is that it plays almost more like a Dateline or 60 Minutes type story then a movie. I'm not saying that that is a bad thing but that's what I was reminded of. The acting is great and I recommend this but be ready for this type of movie. Overall, a very important movie that may have the possibility to change things. I give it a B+.
Excellent Overlooked Movie Not To Be Missed (by thisisalbundy)
This is one of the best corporate scandal movies ever made. This time it involves a Canadian company rather than a standard typical stereotype American one.Worldwide travelers like me will appreciate the international realistic business environment exposure that includes Canada, South Africa and Ecuador. Plot twists and turns do not disappoint. Scenes look very realistic and portray how real life business and living conditions exist in these parts of the world. The performances are outstanding. Andy Garcia gives perhaps his best acting performance yet in his career. Forest Whitaker is equally <more>
as impressive shining again as an actor playing another convincing international role character. Please do yourself a favor and watch this movie. It entertains and delivers so it should not be missed.
Perhaps people should read all the credits at the end of the movie to realize that the film was based on real events, and that people who were actually involved in the events were interviewed. The actors were well chosen and gave good performances. Some characters appear in the story without clarifying who they really are, so it creates a bit of a maze of people, not all really essential for the story. But apart from that the plot flows well. Some people, who have written reviews here, did not think that the story is original enough. What worried me about the story is the Canadian connection. <more>
Could it be based on what a Canadian Company was doing? If so, everybody in Canada should see this movie. This is the third time I see Andy Garcia, one of my favourite actors, in a film in which he was involved in the production. The other two were about the artist Modigliani "Modigliani 2004", and the second about the life of Arturo Sandoval "For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story" 2000 . - It seems the actor wishes to participate in movies that have a meaning for him.
