Plot: A group of astronaut explorers succumb one by one to a mysterious and terrifying force while collecting specimens on Mars. Runtime: 98 mins Release Date: 01 Nov 2013
OK, so it's not quite as similar to Prometheus as the title suggests, but since I know people will be making obvious comparisons, I'll just leave it like that. The acting is superb, the storyline is great, even though it's already been done before see Prometheus, Mission To Mars, etc , and oh my gosh, the visuals are STUNNING. Seriously. They're comparable to 2001: A Space Odyssey, Solaris, Gravity, etc. The work that went into the visual effects was probably one of my favorite things about the movie, and one of the main reasons I wanted to see it in the first place. The <more>
soundtrack is equally awesome, and adds to the film's tone. If you're looking for something original, you might not find it here. However, if you've an open mind, and enjoy watching films for the storytelling and overall quality, then you've got a winner with The Last Days On Mars. Note To Future Mars Astronauts:Don't be too scared by this movie.....or do. ;
I really liked this movie. Classic plot line, if you're a fan of short story space sci fi, ala Authur C. Clarke. Just enuff creepy Kubrick 2001 style in addition to a great soundtrack/music that make this film elevate above the ordinary. The plot, while it does take bits and pieces from many sci-fi classics, and reassembles them - it actually works, for it drives the plot along, slowly ratcheting up the impending doom feeling. It's great, this slow burn of a plot line.If you're a fan of these kinds of stories, then you'll really like this movie. Thoroughly compelling and <more>
The best movie on the red planet! (by sedativchunk)
I'm a science fiction fan and love space movies. With that being said, I can't believe I missed this movie on the big screen, if it ever really made it to the US I love Mars movies . Nonetheless, I discovered this movie on Amazon Prime and absolutely had to check it out. The premise of this "The Last Days on Mars" is pretty simple. There turns out to be an alien bacteria on Mars that turns human beings into freakish zombie creatures. The entire movie is pretty much spent trying to find a way to beat the virus and return to their ship in space after a six month or so voyage <more>
of exploring the red planet. That's the most I will say without spoiling the film.Whether you are a sci fi fan or not, I recommend you check this movie out. Our of all the red planet movies, I honestly consider this one of the best ones. I see a great deal of unnecessary hate for this film on the web. "The Last Days on Mars" doesn't deserve any hate, really. Number one, the set design, ships, costuming, and works, everything visually is absolutely beautiful. This is one of the most realistic red planet films I've ever watched, if out of all of them. It looks like a genuine recreation of what we would see if humans actually traveled to Mars. Number two, the acting is pretty damn good, especially out of Liev Schreiber. Lastly, another good thing going for it, love the soundtrack, very subtle space music with up beat brass sections for the spots that need it. Where all the hate comes from, I think, is from the scientific inaccuracies. Opening air locks quickly, lack of a chain of command, and other technical spots probably rattle some people hard. Although "space zombies" sounds kind of silly, we never know what other life in the universe might do or how it would pose a threat to humanity, so I'm willing to have an open mind about alien virus. Besides the technical challenges of the movie, I believe other people discredit the storyline; let's face it, aliens on a manhunt for humans is not exactly a new idea. These problem spots are the only thing to dock a rating from me, really. Other than that, I thought this movie was really well executed."The Last Days on Mars" is not a perfect movie, but I really loved it! Again I recommend this film whether you a sci fi fan or not, although the hardcore female audience that likes romantic comedies might be turned off from it. Fun space movie and looks like a nice budget film. The other 2013 hit "Gravity" was filled with scientific inconsistencies, yet people praised that film and I also seen it in 3D . I don't believe this film deserves any less credit, just because it has a list of B list actors behind it doesn't mean the film isn't good. If you watch this movie and keep an open mind about it, I think you will really enjoy it. It's a fun, believable story with a good blend of story and action. Probably better executed than "Prometheus" in many ways. Lastly for the naysayers, I am scientist myself and have studied astronomy and astrophysics. If I can get past the technical inaccuracies of movies, the general audiences should too!
I would usually score this an 8, but at the time of my posting it scored a 5.5 which makes no sense to me.You would never know by watching it, but this is a low budget movie about 10% of what Oblivion cost to make . I stumble by accident on this movie and given the quality of most SF stories today I was not expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised. The special effects are impressive for low budget movie, although they are not essential to the story line. It is a dark SF story like Alien , but does not follow your typical Hollywood ending which I always like , but is my guess why it gets <more>
panned in the reviews.I story line is strong, I didn't find myself say "come on!" during this movie once which is rare for me in SF pictures , that is not to say there are no moments, that are a little bit of a stretch, but all in all a good ride. Just so you know, I also Ejoyed Moon, Sunshine and Prometheus I would only give Oblivion a 7, it was okay but very predictable, and about 8 "come on!" moments As for this, if you haven't enjoyed a SF horror in a while, I think you will be entertained by this...
This is a solid well made sci-fi movie! And those are few and far between, these days. A team of Mars workers who collect soil samples, are afflicted by a disease or virus, that affects them one by one! There is a little 'zombie like' thing going on. Zombies on Mars? Why, not? The first 30 minutes of the movie is quite boring. But later on you will learn why! The film develops slowly and then takes to accelerate.. And then my favorite actor Liev Schreiber is in it; as a head actress! He does a great job! Any way: You like Sci-Fi movies; like I do?! You must see this one!Because it IS <more>
a 'must see' film, in that category. Now, I'll leave you to it! Enjoy..
Very original and unique - a must see (by drsgaschet)
Great film. And to set the record straight, it is nothing like the 'Alien' films, it is very original and thought provoking. No over the top monsters or huge special effects, but an inspiring film that runs along very smoothly and grips your attention right until the end.The acting is very good, the story is original, and the scenery on Mars is breathtaking.Would I watch this film again? Absolutely. I give it 9 out of 10.Watch it - it's a gem.
Ray Donovan fights The Walking Dead on Red Planet (by 851222)
Greetings from Lithuania. This "straight to DVD" flick is pretty damn good. Of course, it's not Oscar material, but if you are looking for some nice, small "Z" don't want to spoil flick in unusual setting - look nowhere else - "The Last Days on Mars" will deliver. Liev Schreiber stars in unusual for him role, and he's good in this one. If you liked his acting in "Ray Donovan" - you won't be disappointed. Other cast does a nice job considering the time they spend on screen , especially Olivia Williams. And what i also liked is planet <more>
Mars itself. This movie was clearly made in 2013, when everyone knows how Mars looks like - our mechanical explorers in red planet in couple recent years gave opportunity to see this planet. Planet does not look like a planet in "Red Planet" or "Total Recall" for a reasons i mentioned previously - "The Last Days on Mars" displays Mars like it is in in reality. So overall, if you are looking for some nice Sci-Fi / horror flick in unusual setting - "The Last Days on Mars" delivers, just don't expect much, and you won't be disappointed.
Surprisingly enough I liked this movie, even though I hate Liev Schreiber third grade actor . Someone did his homework on how not to have too many flows in the script, but even so he made it a bit too transparent and obvious in this way.The soundtrack is what made me like the movie and the small little details that were placed, with effort I might add, in the background of the story. There are a few flaws here and there, but the acting was OK a bit indifferent in most cases and with very small doses of emotion , but there were no illogical decisions made and that's how it should be if <more>
you are a scientist and know what you are dealing with and have an idea how to deal with, as well. Also I liked the idea that they didn't use stupid zombies and rather introduced us to a "parasite" that used the host's capabilities intelligence and memories to get it's needed resource water . Even so, they become part of the background and not the main focus of the story, still they made a good impression by adapting, in the sense they ultimately went for human blood, since it contained water. Also decision making in this movie is done progressively, following certain steps and protocols and not skipping to the fastest and dumbest solution like holding in the station till help arrives .I will give credit to this movie 8 out of 10 for the effort it was done to make me be drawn in the action, cause I appreciate the little things, that most movie in our days just don't even seem to care for. But I warn you, it is predictable until the end, unless you like the action and stick to it.
Very realistic, but not very real. (by face-819-933726)
Well that was a nice scifi/zombie surprise. This is the first space movie to be real in the way that they did not have lights "in" the spacesuits, as you would never want to have bright lights in your face when your are on an EVA in a very dark place. So you get a movie where you do not see the actors faces for most of the action scenes, but you give up things for truth right? The cast is great, and very diverse just as you would expect for an international manned research trip to Mars. My only real gripe is that they seemed to have the camera system installed by the same people the <more>
kitted out the ship in the first Alien movie. In the future we do know now for sure that there will be plenty of cameras. However you do get Mars, Astronauts, Cool Rovers, Chrystal Zombies, Original Total Recall moment. I enjoyed it, and you can too.
