If you think like an adult then you are missing the point of this movie (by ssmksi)
It's a shame really. It's a shame that so many people have forgotten what it is to be a child. They have forgotten what it means to go on a fantastic journey their minds. Being a child means that you create things in your mind that adults simply do not. Why do they not do this? is it because it's not "accepted"? Is it because they are too busy worrying about bills and paychecks, gas prices and the economy, elections and political correctness? Most likely. I think if everyone just remembered their childhood for a bit and watched this movie as it if were geared for YOU <more>
when you were a child, that you will absolutely adore this movie. I know I did.It is not so fantastic like Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium or does not have the sense of journey and discovery that The Goonies did way back in the 80's but it has something else. It has an island all to yourself and who didn't want their own island as a kid? Who didn't dream of living in such a way? The cast was great especially Abigail Breslin. She does a very good job of being a little girl on an island of which she's lived on for a while. The animals who they call their pets are adorable and the storyline is very cute. Someone mentioned that Jody's character seemed forced. Did that person read the book? Probably not. Probably not indeed. I think she did a great job.I think this movie is excellent and I highly recommend it to ANYONE that has not forgotten their childhood. Once you forget that, you lose so much of your humanity that really, what's the point in living?
Forget the bad comments, this movie is simply awesome, according to me. Fascinating, and keeps you hooked, and absolutely no violence. Great family movie, and great acting by Nim and Alexandra. Wonderful cinematography and cool locations. Just watch it. I always love movies with islands and lots of ocean stuff. The story is well planned, and the locations are very very cool. This movie is worth watching for those people who love island and water movies. The kid Nim captures the audience attention, and Jodie Foster makes a wonderful performance.Over and all, a great family movie.
A super cool film for the whole family (by c_hohlmann)
Nim's Island is probably one of the most enjoyable family movies i have seen in a long time. all of the characters a believable and the story builds up nicely around our main character.the young girl: Abigail Breslin as Nim Rusoe. Jody Foster has one of her best roles ever since silence of the lambs - period! its nice to see at a different type of roles with lots of humor and warmth. This movies is not just for small children and their moms but can be enjoyed by the male audience also - as it has a good portion slapstick moments. I found my self laughing at Jodie Fosters antics and <more>
phobias. A truly enjoyable moment with her as an actor - and i think she must have loved this type of role as well - this i think seeing her lighting up on the this screenplay. Lets hope we can see her in more fun movies like this. cool pictures, fun animals, nice people and a happy story - what more does one want?.. oh to be on that island of course :-
Great movie in more ways than one (by ryan_christopher)
I have read many comments about predictability, blah, blah, blah! I found this film refreshingly entertaining for all ages. There was something for everyone. Being a female around the same age, I can relate to Jodie Foster since I practically grew up with her!! And I do feel it was great seeing her in a lighter movie than she's been making lately.Abigail Breslin was cute as always. She definitely can hold her own, but then she always has.Gerard Butler - well I can never say enough about him. That's why I put great movie in more ways than one. To see him in two roles was just great. My <more>
daughter who is 15 got me into him from "Phantom" to "Dear Frankie" to "300" and I hate war movies usually to "Tomb Raider" to "P.S. I Love You" and now this movie. We went with 4 of her friends, and after wards we had a discussion on which "Gerard" we liked better. The vote was four for the swash-buckling Alex Rover myself included to two for the more clean-cut Jack! We all agreed that we loved this movie.
A nice "family" film that refreshingly helped bring out the kid in the adults. (by cnet)
I had no idea what to expect of this film, and after reading the synopsis I wasn't to jazzed to see it. But I like both Jodie Foster and Gerald Butler, and the kids were bored so off to the movies we go.I couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised. The movie was a great escape. It had humor, adventure, sharks, flying lizards, volcanoes, hurricanes, neurotic shrews, phantom heroes, and British tourists. All the makings of a classic family movie. The film, for those unfamiliar with the book, revolves around Nim and her Father and the secret island the live on. When Nim's father <more>
goes missing while doing research, she reaches out to the neurotic, reclusive, and "borderline Agoraphobic" Alexandria Rover for help.Comedy, fun, and adventure ensue. One of the best parts of this movie was how it encouraged both reading and using one's imagination. My kids both girls, ages six and nine enjoyed it and my wife and I also thought it was just great.Update 4/11/2008 - My oldest daughter is about halfway through the book and reports that the movie stays very true to the book for the most part.
An incredible adventure for kids and adults. (by DarkVulcan29)
Abigail Breslin is one amazing performer, she seems to light up the screen with her presents, even if the movie is a flop, she somehow makes it memorable. But this movie is no flop, it had everything you would love, adventure, humor, and memorable characters. It is nice to see Jodie Foster doing comedy again, which she has not done for a while, not since The Brave One, FlightPlan, and The Inside Man to name a few. And Gerard Butler is also memorable in duel roles as Nim's father and the imaginary hero Alex Rover. The story begins with an 11 year old girl named Nim Abigail Breslin who <more>
lives on a beautiful Island with her scientist father Gerard Butler . They both seem to live a happy and simply life. Nim also has her animal friends on the island. But when her father goes off in his boat for research, but a bad storm sets him in the middle of nowhere. Nim becomes frightened and emails her favorite author Alex Rover for help. Nim thinks that Alex Rover is an adventurer, like the books he is named after. But lines are blurred between fact and fiction, cause Alex Rover funny performance by Jodie Foster is a female novelist, with no knack for adventure, who in fact is a borderline agoraphobia. Who can't even venture out into her mail box. But Alex is willing to try to overcome this, in order to help Nim out, but will she help her before it's too late? This is for kids and adults, and for adults with kids go see it, it is worth it.
A good one for the whole family... Very creative! (by gcoast-1)
I went and saw this movie at the world premiere. I will start out by saying this... It is a very good for the whole family to enjoy.Storyline: A girl and her father are on a remote island. They are the only ones who live their. The father is a research scientist who is interested in microscopic creatures. Nim, the daughter, is very much in touch with nature and enjoys reading the tales of Alex Rover, an adventurer. The author, Alexandra Rover, is agoraphobic and hasn't left her apartment in a very long time. Dad goes to sea, storm makes him stranded. Nim is stuck alone on the island and <more>
is contacted by Alexandra Rover, and calls for her help. Well, you will have to watch the rest to find out...Pros: A great family movie. It has the perfect recipe of drama, comedy, suspense and a touch of romance. The acting is great. The scenery is beautiful. The special effects are magnificent. The story of a father and daughter living on a remote island is very creative and lends itself to a really great story, which is what this movie is.Cons: Being a family movie, it is predictable. There are also plot elements which go no-where. One being there is a huge talk about Nim's mother at the beginning, but then it really doesn't go anywhere after that.Summary: If you have kids, of any age, this is a good movie to go and see with them. If you don't have kids, but are looking for something different from the usual movies, this is still one to consider. All in all, a good story, well told and with great characters.
A Magical Life For An Ordinary Girl (by Grissom66)
Anything can happen on Nim's Island, a magical place ruled by a young girl's imagination. It is an existence that mirrors that of her favorite literary character, Alex Rover -- the world's greatest adventurer. But Alexandra, the author of the Rover books, leads a reclusive life in the big city. When Nim's father goes missing from their island, a twist of fate brings her together with Alexandra. Now they must draw courage from their fictional hero, Alex Rover, and find strength in one another to conquer Nim's Island. This movie shows that not only family movies are for kids <more>
but for adults as well. A very good film!. Nim's Island 8/10
An island with the right amount of fun and adventure! (by Dan-I-am)
Abigail Breslin stars as Nim, a girl living with her father Gerard Butler on a mysterious island in the south pacific. When her father goes missing whilst on an expedition, she contacts her favourite writer named Alexandra Rover Jodie Foster who hasn't left her house in 16 weeks due to being afraid of everything outdoors. Rover has an imaginary friend, a man and character in her popular books named Alex Rover Also Gerard Butler and this is who Nim expects. Nim's Island is a lot of fun, filled with plenty of adventure. Performances are excellent, especially from Foster who shows <more>
that she can also be casted for less serious comedies. As for the scenery, well that is what pretty much makes the movie. I recently saw the horrid 'Fool's Gold' and was told that the scenery was excellent, well this is just as good. In fact the only reason I didn't give this film a 10 was because the ending, well, it could have been better. But by all means, Nim's Island is excellent! Go see it with your kids or even just to get a laugh, and remember to have fun!
