Sweet, funny and sugary...yet has some serious messages that many people overlook... (by scarletminded)
If you don't like offbeat silly films, you probably didn't like Legally Blonde and you most likely won't like its sequel. So stay away! For us that do, it is a hilarious comedy. My favorite one is the tagline on the V.E.R.S.A.C.E. "think tank" I knew they had one! website that says: "We test makeup on animals, so you don't have to." Anyone who doesn't laugh at that doesn't have any sense of humor, or any sense at all.As much as people think this is a silly stupid comedy, it has a lot to say. First off, even though Elle is into fashion, pink, her <more>
wedding and the like, she is smart. She discovers what is going on behind her back. She writes a bill while her co-workers are waiting for lawyers to do it. I don't think that most viewers get that Elle is a smart character, not an airheaded one. She is just a free spirit and different.Which leads me to the next layer. In both films, Elle is the sore thumb. In a world that worships the thin, tan, blonde girls, she gets into situations where her looks don't work for her. She is put down for what she likes and who she is. She has to show people she isn't the stereotype they think her to be. That gives a good message to teenage girls who would watch the film, a much better film night idea than letting them watch Road Trip, American Pie or any other pointless teenage sex comedy, where the girl is just seen as a sex object and not a real character. This films has ideas. Elle uses her abilities, like making friends, to achieve her goals. She never changes who she is deep down for anyone. She is idealistic, not cynical or jaded, she is friendly and very sweet. More people in the world should be like her. Then there is also the layer of animal rights and fighting for what you believe in, even if that means losing your job. Teen based films barely touch politics, but this one gives a good look inside what goes on...not intensely realistic, but it is a teen movie...one doesn't expect The West Wing here...Not to say that LB2 doesn't have a lot of silly and even stupid humor...I love Paulette and Elle's little dog...but it also has many quick jokes you might not see if you aren't paying close attention. If you have the DVD, pause on the magazines and read them. They are great! It reminds me of movies like Airplane or Austin Powers, the jokes keep coming at you and you have to listen to the dialog closely to get the wit. It also has some repeating jokes, like the intern room reference to Elle and her friends. I actually watched it a second time and laughed louder than the first. It is over the top, like a pink sickening sweet cookie with frosting and sprinkles over it...but it works!
Excellent girl power comedy sequel! (by Catherine_Grace_Zeh)
LEGALLY BLONDE 2: RED, WHITE & BLONDE, in my opinion, is an excellent girl power comedy sequel! If you ask me, it was just the right kind of film to be released on the fourth of July. This is because most of it takes place in Washington, D.C., on Capitol Hill. I laughed really hard when said, "It's Capitol Hill Barbie!" Also, Rudd Sally Field was kind of weird. I didn't like her hairdo. Personally, I think Sally Field looks better as a brunette, which is what she was born as. The queer dog thing was even weirder than Rudd. Still, this is an excellent girl comedy sequel <more>
for anyone who enjoyed LEGALLY BLONDE. Also, the soundtrack is really good, too. Now, in conclusion, if you enjoyed LEGALLY BLONDE or are a fan or Reese Witherspoon, you're in for a good time and lots of laughs, so see this movie today.
Ignore The Other Reviewers-I Thought This Movie Was GREAT!! (by stamp1)
Don't pay any attention to the other negative comments being made about this movie, I thought it was hilarious!!! I kept laughing all through the movie, and I WASN'T ALONE, the theater I saw it in was packed with NO empty seats, AND EVERYONE WAS LAUGHING SO HARD AND LOUD, I couldn't always hear all the jokes being made. I laughed at least 25 times. I also enjoyed the messages the film made: 1 ONE PERSON CAN make a difference. After seeing this movie, I believed I could make a difference in the world. 2 A person who is honest and believes in the other people around them, can <more>
convince them to support & do the good or morally right thing they already know that they should do. 3 A person who is happy with themselves, AND BELIEVES IN THEMSELVES, will make others believe in them too. AND others will WANT to be with them also.4 True Leaders, like Abe Lincoln, will always choose to do the morally right thing to do, even if powerful & rich people are against them. Or like Pres. Bush 43 who freed the people of Iraq even though the evil leaders of the world were against him, and he stood up to them because giving the people of Iraq freedom from a monster like Saddam Hussein was the RIGHT THING TO DO, even if it wasn't popular!! True Leaders will courageously stand up for their convictions AGAINST ALL ODDS!! 5 If you passionately believe in something enough in this movie it was called Bruiser's Bill and get enough people to believe in it, & march for it, then eventually the powers that be in this movie it was Congress will have to listen to you. In real life, this is how the organization MADD started, the founder of Mothers Against Drunk Driving had a dream, to change the laws to punish & imprison people who drove intoxicated & killed innocent people. She was morally right, she had incredible convictions, she convinced enough other people to march & petition to get the laws changed, so that Congress & state governors had to listen to her. Elle Woods Reese Witherspoon in the movie does the same type of thing, but the movie is hilarious & has a VERY happy ending!! 6 A corrupt, money-hungry congressperson sound familiar? CAN BE DEFEATED by honest, hard-working, sweet, nice, AND fashion-conscience people! So don't despair if you think all politicians are corrupt & wicked, because they can be defeated by the honest among us if we stand up together & say we AREN'T going to put up with their lies & dishonesty ANYMORE!!This was an excellent movie with great moral lessons. Don't let a bunch of NEGATIVE, GROUCHY, BAD-TEMPERED reviewers who probably didn't even see the movie anyway!! , keep you from going to see this! If you liked the first one, you'll REALLY like this second one.
It's difficult to say whether I like this movie or the first one better, but one thing is for sure. Since I love dogs, I loved the canine focus! It was a great idea to focus on Elle's dog, Bruiser because a cute, funny, and heart-warming storyline was formed as a result. I also loved Luke Wilson Emmett in this movie. He just seems to appear too perfect of a guy in LB 2 as well as in the first, and he acts so well that it's hard to picture him in any other role other than the so called "perfect boyfriend." I've seen him appear in various movies and shows such as <more>
"That 70's Show" where he makes guest appearances and I would definitely like to see how he performs in more acting roles. However, I don't think I could ever see him playing the role of a bank robber or something! As always, Reese Witherspoon is excellent! After watching the first movie, check this one out! I think I have no choice but to give it a rating of 9 for it's satisfactory canine content! My dog Wishbone gives it four paws up!
Just as she did in the first "Legally Blonde," Elle Woods encounters a world full of churlish elitists who disdain her seeming Barbie doll personality and wins them over through the sheer force of her implacable optimism and good will. Too bad the same can't be said of the stick-in-the-mud critics and IMDB users who have driven this silly, delightful movie into the ratings basement. Yo! Lighten up, girlfriends!"Legally Blonde 2" traffics in broad humor no pun intended. Seriously . Very broad humor. As such it's not for everybody, but in a world where a no-talent <more>
hack like Adam Sandler and the more talented but wildly overrated Farelly brothers can rake in millions and accolades at least in the latter case out of gross-out jokes about body fluids, surely there is room in our funny bones for a ditzy innocent like Elle Woods. True, broad humor is often the refuge of the cliche comic imagination, and a franchise that rests on an incarnation of Barbie risks falling into predictable jokes of the "dumb blonde" genre. But the happy fact is that "Legally Blonde 2" keeps the material fresh even as it plows terrain made familiar by Judy Holliday, Marilyn Monroe, and Alicia Silverstone. It does so a by having a lot of fun with the material and b being blessed with the inexhaustibly delightful talents of Reese Witherspoon, whose perky, wall-to-wall smile practically lives a life of its own, and who delivers her lines with all the conviction that her character Elle would have brought to the role if she were playing it. And although it would be a stretch to call Elle a feminist except insofar as she is not ruled by anyone, let alone a man , neither is the film reactionary, unlike, say, cynical pseudo-feminist claptrap like Charlie's Angels. In fact, it's best just to leave any expectations of social uplift, political analysis, or emotional insights at home, just as one would for a pedicure, bubble bath, or slumber party. Girls just want to have fun. Sometimes that's all we all want, or need.
This is a much better film than people are willing to give credit for. Audiences saw the first "Legally Blonde" and wanted a repeat -- well this is not a formulaic repeat but instead a sequel that hopefully will make viewers think. There was a very strong message here: how does the legislative branch of American Government work? And more important how does it not work? The ever-idealistic Elle Woods goes to Washington, DC, to make a point and, at first, fails miserably. But the right shall win out!Sally Field plays her nemesis -- always seeming to support -- but is she really? Quite <more>
an interesting departure from the "goody-two-shoes" that Ms Field usually plays: "I'll get you and your little doggie too."Jennifer Coolidge reprises her original role -- and is painfully reduced to a bit part rather than the hilarious character that should have been written. When Elle visits the Lincoln Monument there is an evocation of the greatest of dumb blond films -- "Born Yesterday" -- for which Judy Holliday won the Best Actress Oscar. I am not willing to say that Ms Witherspoon's performance is on a par with Judy Holliday's; but the mise-en-scene and the overall feel of the moment are exactly right. The photography of Washington, DC, was probably the best I have ever seen... We have all seen pictures of the Washington Monument or the Lincoln Memorial -- but not in the vision that they were photographed for this film. They took on the otherworldly image that they should always be imbued with -- they became more real than real -- if possible. Do not sell this film short just because it is different from the first... Viewers made that mistake with "The Thin Man" films too... This is or should be a long-running franchise that will continue to entertain for years to come.
i can't stand how when you leave comments to movies on this site there is the part where you have your "one line summary" and it says underneath that "of your comments, not of the film" why is that there? i don't know what to put cause a summary of my comments is a summary of my comments on the movie. so they end up being the same thing. i guess it's too complicated for me. BUT this movie IS good. i saw it in the summer when it was really hot and i didn't have air conditioning. and i got talked into seeing it. and i was very pleasantly surprised. the <more>
message of the movie is good. and reese witherspoon is amazing. she was cracking me up. i think she should be in better movies cause she seems to be very talented. the movie has other problems but those two good things were more then enough to make me really enjoy the movie. i ended up seeing the first one too which is really funny too. and i hate fashion and rich people jokes. but it's all about reese and her delivery. it works somehow so well. and the dumb blonde cliche. i don't know how it works but she is good. so see the movies and give her a chance if you haven't. now i have a one line summary add on!
I found Legally Blonde 2 to be a great summer movie. I am not the target audience for this film, but I still found it enjoyable, engaging and a lot of fun. I was reminded of those great Judy Holiday movies of the fifties..."It Should Happen to You", "Solid Gold Cadillac" and "Born Yesterday". There were some forced allusions to "Mr Smith goes to Washington", but I really think that this film owes its inspiration to Judy Holiday.Reese Witherspoon is, as always, enchanting. It is interesting to me to see someone so engaging on screen. Time will tell if <more>
she will outlast her counterparts like Meg Ryan. For a summer film, this one is charming, has a message not a great message, but a message and is a lot of fun. If you like this movie, check out those old Judy Holiday flicks, they are among my favourite films
I think people are getting better at sequels than they used to. A good sequel doesn't imitate or retread the original but builds on it. That's the case in Legally Blonde II. One was compact and inspirational with Reese Witherspoon carrying most of the comedic load. In II she has lots of help. Bob Newhart's deadpan is perfect for the doorman. Sally Field has to play it pretty straight as a congresswoman but plenty of others help out. The Delta Nu's are a bit overdone with the exception off Elle's two friends leading the interns in a bow wow wow cheer. Priceless. A lot of <more>
the humor is situational and the script sparkles.Witherspoon of course is the star and one of the few that can carry a movie by herself. Elle matures in her masquerade as a ditzy blonde but with plenty of smarts and a friendly heart of gold. I saw it twice and enjoyed it even more the second time as I was able to pick up some of the nice little touches I missed the first time. It's not really a classic but pleasant enough and well worth a look.
