Plot: The year 2050 the planet has become overpopulated, to help control population the government develops a race. The Death Race. Annually competitors race across the country scoring points for... Runtime: mins Release Date: 17 Jan 2017
The Village Voice said this "is the only movie that matters in 2017" and with only two weeks into the year, they very well may be right. Death Race 2050 is set in a well thought out dystopic near-future, masked with a ridiculously fantastic premise. I loved this movie and give it 10/10 because it accomplished what it set out to do, with many subtle threads and social commentaries. The humour can be silly without being stupid, the political and social messages are profound without being preachy, the casting is great, and the acting is perfectly dialed in. The movie has an uplifting <more>
and inspiring conclusion despite not taking itself seriously all the way through. If given a chance, it will gain a cult following similar to "Idiocracy."
Snarky, True, and Well Thought Out (by industrialwonk)
Death Race 2050 addresses some of the less than savory trends that are now both operative and readily apparent in our semi-functional somewhat- dysfunctional society. Technology has caused self-absorbed people to live vicariously through others and in the process have become lost in their own "virtual reality." This movie points out the fact that corporate propaganda, ignorance, feminism, identity politics,, religion asexuality, selective fact choosing, and big data feedback have caused our society to degrade and to lose a understandable- controllable overview. Almost every line of <more>
dialogue, scene, visual map , and character zealot, hedonist, AI, voyeur, executive in this movie have been crafted to explain and bring to light the current trend. Truth can be unpalatable even when presented in humorous and snarky manner. Unfortunately, the people that do not understand this movie are the people in need of it the most.
An excellent B-movie in the tradition of They Live and Robocp (by vkaufold)
This is the Thing. If you ever loved a B movie --for the right reasons-- this is the Golden Glove. If you like They Live, if you like Robocop, Machete... you may have a new favorite. Not only is it freakishly on point for the new Trump epoch, it also has a very elusive ingredient for B-movies : Intelligent writing! Now keep in mind the film is satirizing a culture of stupidity, violence, and greed, so you have to look closely for the intelligence hiding behind the explosions and vulgarity, but it's there, sometimes winking at you from behind a flaming haystack. It's the abundance and <more>
timing of the jokes, both subtle and sometimes deliciously brutal, that should warrant a justified cult following for this jam. What's that? You didn't come to this movie for jokes? For sly throwaway gags about a dystopian future? No problem. There are so many other movies where big men drive cars that go fast. Please watch one of them instead if that is your thing. Leave this rare movie for me and my people. We need it.
Much better than the current 3.4 rating. (by stratmandude)
I saw the original Death race 2000 back in 1977, My Dad was one of the first people to get HBO back then and he let me stay up and watch Blazing saddles with him, He fell asleep then Death race 2000 came on. An R rated movie, I was 11. I loved it. the other death race sequels got it all wrong, the original was a cult B movie with a very dark sense of humor. the two sequels that followed were bad action movies. If you liked the original Death race 2000, you will love this movie. It is as if no time has passed. It captures the same feeling and has the same wacky humor and blood and guts as the <more>
original. this is destined to be another cult classic as it was Intended to be. The acting was better than I expected. it has good cast of characters. It starts off slow but about 20 minutes in I was hooked.
Give us liberty or give them death (by nogodnomasters)
This is a reboot of "Death Race 2000." The plot and scenes should look familiar and predictable. The film has been updated for the modern era as far as soundtrack and characters for satire. Malcolm McDowell plays the Chairman of the United Corporations of America who has hair similar to that of Donald Trump. Manu Bennett plays the role of Frankenstein except he removes his mask early because it itches. Burt Grinstead plays driver Jed Perfectus a genetic modified human who replaces Sly Stallone as the main antagonist. Folake Olowofoyeku is driver Minerva who is famous as a singer and <more>
for her sex tape. Anessa Ramsey plays Tammy, who has her own cult religion. Yancy Butler leads the resistance. The film is critical of the media, corporations, and a bunch of other stuff. The script had a number of good lines, some satirical, some just fun like, "Jihad for Jimi Hendrix." If you loved the original, you should love the reboot.Guide: F-word, nudity
I'm sure Tarantino would be a huge fan of this movie, if he sees it! (by Hellmant)
'DEATH RACE 2050': Four and a Half Stars Out of Five A new remake to the 1975 cult classic 'DEATH RACE 2000'. Like the original, and unlike the 2008 remake and it's two sequels , this redo was once again produced by Roger Corman. It's also, once again, set in the near future, when an ultra-violent race competition, where drivers earn points by killing pedestrians, has become immensely popular with the public. This film stars Manu Bennett, Malcolm McDowell, Marci Miller, Burt Grinstead, Folake Olowofoyeku, Anessa Ramsey, Leslie Shaw and Yancy Butler. It was directed <more>
by G.J. Echternkamp, and it was written by Matt Yamashita. The film was released directly to DVD and Blu-ray earlier this year, and it's gotten positive reviews from the few critics that have seen it. I loved it as well.In 2050, the country has become severely overpopulated and drastically unemployed due to robotic labor . In order to create population control, the Chairman of the United Corporations of America McDowell has created an automobile race where drivers gain points by killing pedestrians. An apathetic and ridiculously lazy public loves the game, despite their sometimes high risk of fatality, and they also view the event through virtual reality. Frankenstein Bennett is the popular returning champion, who must take on multiple other sadistic racers, while brainwashed rebels try to stop them and end the game for good.I enjoyed the 2008 remake, and it's sequels to a lesser degree , but those films really bare little resemblance to Roger Corman's classic original. This remake feels almost exactly like the first film; it's a beautiful and highly nostalgic homage, for me and probably most other 80s raised kids . It also brings back warm feeling memories, of all the sadistically violent action movies, laced with disturbing black humor, that I used to watch and love as a kid on USA and TBS . It really looks and feels just like one of those films; it's classic Roger Corman, and 70s and 80s style grindhouse cinema, at it's best. I'm sure Tarantino would be a huge fan of this movie, if he sees it, just like I am!Watch our movie review show 'MOVIE TALK' at: https://vimeo.com/216048414
Amazing as long as you have the right perspective and have seen the original (by videodan32)
OK. So it is cheap. The effects are terrible. The acting OK. The music choices vary in quality. Now that I got that out of the way....This remake was fantastic and amazingly true in tone to the original making many improvements along the way. No spoilers here except to say that the updates made sense, the characters were fun, and everyone seemed to be having a good time making it. Malcolm McDowell did what he does so well playing the villain. It was episodic, but so was the original. You get the feeling that the director studied the original for what worked, then brought that and a lot more <more>
into the remake. Roger Cormen and his daughter produced, so you know it was made by the right people Cormen produced the original as well If you did not like it, you would not have liked the original. It was a worthy remake that reminds us what a lot of imagination can do on a limited budget. Cormen devotees should be thrilled.
this is a 70's B/ grindhouse movie throwback in the best way possible. Manu Bennett is awesome as always, Perfectus was the perfect foil, Malcolm McDowell was hamming it up as only he can, and it was just genuinely a ton of fun. they went old school for the special effects, and it works for the tone of the movie. face on shots into the cars in front of obvious green screen, body parts that are obviously fake, tiny skips between vehicles crashing and then exploding. these techniques were done in just the right way to bring back the nostalgia feels if you grew up on classing cheesy cult <more>
movies. the storyline isn't a carbon copy of Death Race 2000, and throws in a few nice swerves. the social commentary is still there. seeing some of the new names for areas in America was a running joke that kept getting funnier the further West the races went. from the intentionally dated special effects,to the biting political satire, this is a worthy successor to the classic cult movie.
An Awesome Flashback To Great B-Movie Shlock. (by stephenabell)
Way back in 1975 Roger Corman gave us the great Death Race 2000 which introduced us to race car driver Frankenstein in a dystopian future where vehicular manslaughter gets the driver points. In 1978 Corman gave us Deathsport a similar concept and once again starring John Carradine. In some countries, this released under Death Race 2050, though it wasn't a sequel. Now in 2017 Corman is back with the real deal. And what a deal it is. The Death Race is still running and the United Corporations of America are making the money off the back of the games. Frankenstein is still unhappy with his <more>
role as the favourite and the puppet of The Chairman; all he wants to do is race... he's a racecar driver. The Chairman, knowing Frankenstein's feelings has arranged for a replacement in a genetically perfect human, Jed Perfectus. Then there are the rebels who are tired of being controlled by the corporations and decide to fight back by attacking the race and the drivers. What director and writer G J Echternkamp, along with fellow writer Matt Yamashita bring the audience is a wonderful satire wrapped up in a schlocky B-Movie. I particularly loved the crappy in car scenes where they go back to the 70's style of screen driving... the actors sit in a stationary car while the landscape plays behind them on green-screen.There are some nice story elements which bring the film up-to-date. In this race, the drivers have a passenger. The passenger is the gateway for the virtual reality ridealongs. This is a nice addition as it allows for a building of characters, whereas the first movie was more race and kill based.Malcolm McDowell is brilliant as The Chairman, camping it up whenever possible... and you have to love that hair. Though it's Manu Bennett as Frankenstein that steals the show. John Carradine was good but Bennett adds a little more depth to the character and I like his portrayal the better of the two.If you ever wondered what the great thing about B-movies was or what a makes a good Roger Corman production then give this film a view.If you like funny films with a story and a point of view then give this a view.If you want a good night in with a good film... then give this a view. And sing with Minerva Jefferson and myself... Drive, Drive, Drive,. Kill, Kill, Kill. Drive. Kill. Drive. Kill. Drive. Kill. Drive. Kill.
