Plot: In this darkly romantic ghost story, a woman (Academy Award Winner Mira Sorvino) travels to an isolated cabin where she finds herself stalked by an apparition (Shane West, "A Walk To Remember") who has come to inhabit her space as his own. With the unexpected arrival of the woman's boyfriend (Golden Globe nominee Justin Kirk, "Weeds"), the dark spirit's haunting grows more obsessive. Soon the woman begins to exhibit weirdly irrational behavior as the thin line between sanity and possession begins to unravel. A stunning directorial debut from Tom Provost, "The Presence" is grounded in terrific performances, beautiful cinematography, a lush musical score, and a Hitchcockian style that explores the idea of pure cinematic storytelling. I recently caught this beautiful film at the Dallas Film Festival. The response of the crowd was certainly different from some of the reviews here. The audience loved the movie, which was evident not only by the response during the movie but during the Q&A after the movie with the director. I went with three other people and while our reaction in some ways was split - two of us loved the opening, which is very quiet, very still and two were not as fond of the opening section as they were the rest of the movie - by the end all of us found the movie very creepy and thought-provoking. Some <more>
people in the audience, including one of our group, cried at the end. We all had different interpretations of what was going on. We found the ambiguity in the movie very refreshing. Finally a movie that asks the audience to participate and think! Subsequently I am befuddled by some of the reviews here. I guess some people were expecting a horror movie but the movie is not a horror movie. The director, while noting that the production team has had a hard time labeling the movie, given it is so different from the norm, did call it a Gothic romance. One of my friends thought it was a twisted fairy tale. It certainly is lushly photographed and the score we all thought was incredible. I don't want to give away too much but if you are in the mood for a creepy, tense yet someone romantic twist on a traditional ghost story, and you don't mind being asked to think, this is an excellent film. People always seen to complain about Hollywood making the same type of movies over and over. This definitely is not the same old thing!
Beautiful and unsettling (by lafilmguy30-7-454157)
Some of the reviews are wildly different from the reactions on the Facebook page. I'm not sure why some of the people were expecting horror, it doesn't seem to be billed as such. At any rate, I found it very captivating and pretty unsettling at times. My girlfriend thought it was less scary but romantic. We both loved it and thought it was cool we reacted to it in very different ways. It is unlike anything either of us have ever seen, which was a plus for us. The acting was top notch and the score is incredible. It is definitely not the same old thing anyone has seen before. I'm <more>
not even sure what you would call it. I've read it is scheduled for some kind of release in the fall. I'd encourage people to check it out.
I saw this at a film festival and loved the movie. It is elegant, creepy, visually stunning and, by the end, very moving. The first 30 minutes have virtually no dialogue, which seems to have thrown some people. I guess some might find it slow but it was very cool to see a story being told with no dialogue. I found this section very creepy. And weirdly romantic. it is a highly original movie. Some of the bad reviews seem to stem from˙the expectation it is a horror film. It is definitely not a horror film and if someone was expecting that, I can imagine not liking it. Expect something very <more>
I've never seen a "ghost story" use a device such as this. I won't tell you what it is, but let you see for yourself. At first I thought it was kind of laughable, but during the course of the movie it got creepier and creepier for me.Filmed in Oregon, the beautiful cinematography seems to be another character in the film as is the haunting film score that sets the mood right from the titles. The film's opening shots reveal a remote cabin on an island lake in the woods, and there's something ominous in the stillness of these scenes and what they reveal.Mira Sorvino <more>
plays a woman who retreats to this, her family's cabin, for some serious alone time to write and reflect. But, even before her fiancé joins her there, she's not really alone, and falls under the spell of the cabin. Traumatic memories from the past overcome her with a little supernatural assistance and threaten to destroy her life and future happiness. But, supernatural help from another source puts things right for her . . . at least for now.Something about this film reminded me of Passengers which I really liked although there's no similarity at all in the story lines. Maybe it's just the dreamy way the film unfolds as well as its supernatural elements. Also, both films effectively use their locations to set the tone for their stories.
A horror film that will surprise you from the first shot to the last. (by diane-chandler-75)
This is perhaps one of the best films I have ever seen. Being a very 'wordy' person, I find it beyond amazing to see how much Shane West could draw out the character and personality of the 'ghost' without uttering a word. He acts with every inch of his body and displays emotions on his face and in his eyes better than most who have words to further their objective. To say he is talented is a gross understatement.I was well pleased with all the actors and the way they were able to interpret their role. I particularly liked Justin Kirk's portrayal of the man. He was warm, <more>
supportive and loving toward the woman, even when she was quite literally coming apart at her mental and emotional seams. The freedom to interpret just what the ghost and the man in black represent adds dimension to the film in a way not seen often in the horror genre. The actions of the ghost in the closing minutes of the film give teeth to an already difficult role to portray. Learning the decisions he made and the effect those decisions had on the outcome is gratifying, especially if you are one that finds certain satisfaction from knowing you were able to unravel the plot as the film developed.I would recommend this film to anyone who enjoys a film that makes you think and will most definitely watch it again. The absence of dialog in so much of the film creates a challenge to the viewer to know the characters well and pay close attention to every small detail. Those cumulative details build a story you will not be disappointed in from professionals whom you will admire more highly by the end of the film.
Creepy and thought provoking end (by deborahlight71)
I really don't understand the negative reviews other than this movie is not a fast paced, violent, bloody or shallow story. If that's what you want, you'll probably think this movie is too slow or boring. But for those who like movies as an art and a good story, this is a gem. I really, really enjoyed Shane West's performance as the ghost. I've never seen a performance like his and truly appreciated his acting ability. Mira Sorvino is good as the damaged, vulnerable yet independent woman who has major trust issues and a shaky past. The other ghost, the bad one, is a <more>
classic character. This movie surprises, scares and makes you think on many levels. The cinematography is beautiful. The island is the place dreams are made of. Give this movie a try. You'll be rewarded for sticking through till the end!
My wife and I just watched it, and I thought it was quite good. It is certainly somewhat of a "chick flick", which probably accounts for many of the negative reviews I actually don't see why so many guys don't like romantic movies . Now, if you try to make too much sense of it from a rational point of view, then you'll be missing the whole point. On the surface, it's a ghost story, but really it's about a woman struggling to come to terms with the male demons from her past and cast them out. It's kind of like abstract art - it's an emotional piece that <more>
amplifies what's inside the viewer. It sort of reminded me of "What Dreams May Come", another favorite of mine. I suggest you give it a shot.
Unexpected, and very moving. Very nice, simple and understated, beautifully shot and well acted, It had many layers; How we deal with our own demons, and how in truth, we are not alone. We are influenced by our own personal ghosts, memories of things past, and events that shape us. I had never heard of this movie, but it deserves a lot more attention.I recommend the watch, Do not expect a horror show, although it does have some spooky moments, Let the mood sink in, The pacing is slow and deliberate. That's the way it was meant to be. Just let the story tell itself. I do not believe there <more>
is a need for an explanation, the events seem straight forward. One would have to be rather dense to miss the point, and for that matter, the beauty, although symbolism abounds. What you will not find is; Over the top Paranormal Activity cliché's, Evil Dead bloodbaths, or Cabin in the Wood's boogie men. If that is what you are looking for, look elsewhere. The spoiler ? If the spell works, you may find it uplifting.
I wouldn't say I put tons of weight on other people's reviews but I will if the issue is consistent. When this came on this afternoon, it sounded interesting but I came here and the negative comments made it sound as if it would not be a movie I'd like while the positive weren't really helpful--for me.So, I don't know how helpful this will be but I'm so glad I didn't listen to the negatives. Was it a slow start. Yes. Was it "quiet" for 15-20 minutes? Yes. Was it a bad movie? Not even close. If you are looking for movies with lots of action, gore and in <more>
your face scares, this isn't for you. I happen to like both and this one delivered in terms of spooky but not the in your face kind. It's a story about a woman's growth past what happened to her as a child--something I can relate to. The betrayal of someone she loved and trusted and how does one get past that? Not easily. It was also a story of forgiveness and I believe the ghost was who many people believe it was; otherwise, why would he have asked for her forgiveness? Certainly the other suggested identification would have had no reason to ask for forgiveness--he didn't know her.The movie had some chills but that really wasn't the movie. If you want a tender story with your chills, by all means, check it out. If that doesn't appeal to you, I would recommend you not--you'll not like it. But for me, I will watch and enjoy this one again.
