Best film I've seen in a long time (by adng-97465)
This film is a breath of fresh air from all the americanised rubbish at the cinema and rammed down your throat by popular culture. Loved the story, nothing was overdone it was just done to the right level. This film is not about explosions or situations carefully choreographed specifically to make you feel a certain emotion to tick a box and appeal to a demographic that has been studied by a panel of experts - it's just a fantastic film that is what bond should be. Subtle, engaging and....British.Kit was awesome in this film. Great actor with a lot more range than I assumed having watched <more>
GoT.I haven't watched the series yet, but I will now.
Was expecting a treat - but got even more than I'd hoped for. Harry Pearce is disgraced after a call he made goes wrong and even worse, annoys the Americans. As a consequence, MI5 is being sidelined. Harry suspects someone inside MI5 is working to undermine the service and is determined to unmask them. As a lone wolf he is more dangerous than he was at the head of MI5, so it's even more exciting than TV Spooks was. His young protégé Will Holloway is tasked with bringing Harry in by MI5 but also asked by Harry Pearce to help him stop the traitor. Who can he trust? What should he do? <more>
With lots of twists and turns, it's the most satisfying thriller I've seen this year. Spooks fans and anyone enjoying thrillers will love it - can we have a sequel please?
more Bourne than Bond with a dash of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (by raybatchelor)
Considering weighty blockbusters like Mad Max which I felt was too rushed and lacked empathy for anyone good or bad - I so miss the original. Avengers, which lacked Coulson and had too many quips from just too many characters and should have had Iron Man making more of these, as he's actually good at sarcastic wit. Then come Spooks, underrated and the underdog and blows the blockbusters out of the water. Harry Pierce's finale twist is amazing and the storyline for Ruth concludes. Very satisfying if you have watched all the series on BBC or elsewhere. Spooks and Kingsmen-the Secret <more>
Service both prove this is a great year for this genre.
Another great movie based on MI-5 (by parents-30598)
I was surprised to find this movie and I mean very pleasantly surprised. I have watch all seasons of the British TV Show MI-5 and still watch its re-runs every once in a while and I never get bored. It was great to see some of the original cast of the show in this movie. Harry Pearce wish there were people like him in top government positions, straight arrow and unwavering in his righteous beliefs. Also Malcolm the tech whiz and a few more from the original cast. Love the fact it was like a continuation of the show with Ruth Evershed gone and all the great characters from the TV show. Now the <more>
movie itself was definitely worthy of the title from the outstanding TV show. Great story-line, tight plot and a nice twist as with the TV show. Thank you for such an excellent movie, and I truly wish the show itself would resume again, nothing like it was produced or aired neither in the UK nor here in the US.
British MI5 is transporting something or someone to hand it over to the CIA. The cargo is Adem Qasim, a Muslim terrorist. The transport gets stuck in traffic. The chopper watching over is sent elsewhere. Suddenly guys on motorcycles and guns arrive. To avoid the death of innocents, all those folks on the road, the guy in charge of the operation, Harry, decides they should just hand over Qasim peacefully even though agent June was ready to defend their position but she was told by her partner not go for her gun. After the terrorists leave, she runs after them, another agent is killed, and the <more>
bad guys escape. That means Harry will have to sacrifice his job and he ends up committing suicide, or does he? Meanwhile a decommissioned former agent in Russia is summoned against his will to help find Harry. Turns out this kid, Will, was removed by Harry from MI5, his father was MI5 as well and Harry's partner, but died under mysterious circumstances.Sure enough, Harry contacts Will. He wants his help. Earlier we learned that Harry continued to go after Qasim and had an agent in the terror network. But Qasim found out and killed her but he also let Harry know that MI5 is compromised. Harry wants to know the name of the mole and offers Qasim to turn over his wife who is being held by the FSB.Meanwhile MI5 is terrified that the CIA will take them over ? , which doesn't make a whole lot of sense. And it's not like there's some meaningful difference between these two governments when it comes to "security." At some NATO shindig, one of Qasim's guys blows himself up killing a government-MI5 liaison.Harry sets up an exciting meet with Will at London Heathrow, while MI5 is monitoring Will and trying to hunt Harry. But Harry sure is something else, easily outwitting everyone.Eventually Will realizes that MI5 is indeed compromised and he goes somewhat rogue as Harry goes ahead with the offer to exchange Qasim's wife for information. When that fails, Harry has one more offer for Qasim who's actually about to release 15 bombs all over London. But the new offer is more enticing and also a very bold surprise move by Harry. All along the lesson for Will and the newer agents is that you can make good choices or better choices. And some choices aren't without sacrifice.MI-5 is a pretty exciting intelligence thriller. The story is convoluted but very rich and interesting. There is no shortage of twists and turns and surprises and all loose ends are tied in the end. Of course all this requires that Harry function in god-mode being able to predict everything with accuracy and have everything go his way. The whole meet at the airport was excellent. There are a lots of aerial views of London which is a city well-suited for those images. Some scenes also take place in Berlin and Moscow. The problem for me was the lack of a central character. Here the duties are split between Harry, who is in the shadows pulling the strings, and Will who can't make up his mind whether he's going to trust Harry or turn him in to MI5. I'm not familiar with the TV series but I take it the casting of Firth was mandatory. A shame because he's better suited as a desk agent than some superagent on the field. Otherwise MI-5 is very strong, no-nonsense thriller.
A Brittish Spy-movie with inelligence (by nponline-979-699546)
What struck me most in this film was the overlapping clues of what what was going on. Most of the time you were unsure of where the events would take the plot, and then you get a reveal. But by the next scene, you are not sure if what was revealed was true... untill the very end.Brilliant script, a bit low paced sometimes compared to Hollywood -but this is a Brittish movie and as such is a great one! Good acting and camera work was really good! So nice to see this coming out from outside the US.The plot in this movie really sold it for me. I loved it!
Something Old, Something New (by adamhoulding)
For the uninitiated, 'Spooks' or MI5 as the Yanks say was a British television show centered around MI5 spies nicknamed Spooks and essentially the British NSA . Be under no illusions: this doesn't have blind patriotism, missing super-weapons or a suave chiseled hero. And while Kit Harington is the handsome lead star, the actual star is none other than long-time veteran Peter Firth. Ah Peter Firth. Never has a older man with wrinkles and a receding hairline been so bad-ass. Firth is the blend of George Smiley and Jack Bauer, a very British and Un-Hollywood-y figure. And <more>
that's the key to The Greater Good's success: it feels fresh and oh so British that it may confuse the Yank audience expecting car chases and epic showdowns. Even the Arabic villain is sympathetic, never cartoonish or monologuing, and similar in part to Anwar al- Awlaki. Even a slightly simple Kit Harington fits perfectly in the thrilling spy jigsaw, being a disgraced case officer slightly too soft for such a cold world. And yes, case officer. Not secret agent, as one is completely disposable and the other uses such people to achieve, yes, the Greater Good. Bond would not last in this world, and Bauer would make melodrama of decisions. Pierce would be break it down to cruel ugly arithmetic, one dies while two lives. As modern spy-craft goes, this is the most realistic to hit the big screen yet. If you haven't seen the television series, this is a solid British spy movie with a thrilling storyline. If you have, some sweet Easter eggs will leave you smiling with secret glee. This feels like not a television movie but a gritty British film worthy of recognition. The actors, directing, setting compliment each other perfectly. It feels like going to a fancy restaurant and eating the greatest dish of Bangers and Mash. Simply thrilling and unafraid to let the audience think, this is a solid movie experience. This is destined to have a sequel. If not, it at least is a beautiful little gem in a pile of stones.
The Spooks TV show has been a popular hit in the UK. Now the producers have gone and made a spin-off movie. Peter Firth is back in his role as Harry while we welcome a new addition in the form of Kit Harrington. First of all, this movie is somewhat separate from the TV show. You don't need to have seen the TV show in order to understand what is going on. The movie had a fairly decent storyline and that is what it mainly focuses on. There are also a couple of intense moments which is what I like in a thriller. There is also a bit of character development as well. Without giving anything <more>
away there are also a couple of twists. Don't go into this movie expecting gun fights and car chases - you will be disappointed. They didn't have that kind of thing in the TV show, so it would make sense to do the same thing for the movie. All in all, it was a good movie to enjoy. I have only seen the first two seasons of the TV show which I enjoyed and I didn't have any problems with this movie. So for me it worked.
MI5 spymaster Harry Pearce Peter Firth is in disgrace after Middle East mega-terrorist Qasim Elyes Gabel escapes on his watch. But even from the sidelines Sir Harry throws himself into a private campaign, with the help of rookie agent Will Holloway Kit Harington , to recapture Qasim, prevent a monstrous attack on London and expose a traitor at the heart of the security services. The mole plot is recycled from John Le Carre and many another spy writer and I guessed early on who the traitor would be . GAME OF THRONES rent-a-hunk Harington slightly underplays a Jason Bourne clone in a story <more>
cloned from a Bourne screenplay. But if the bare bones of the script lack originality, the feeling of this-is-how-it-must-really- be watching Intelligence people urgently doing their thing gives this movie all the edge and pace that made the TV series so very engrossing. Central to SPOOKS's success has always been the substantial in both senses presence of Peter Firth; his Harry Pearce combines the gravitas of George Smiley with the forcefulness of 007's boss M. Jennifer Ehle, Tim McInnerny and David Harewood vie with each other for creepiness as a trio of Whitehall mandarins. Even if you're not a fan of the BBCtv series, this is a cracking good spy story.
