This movie gives you everything you want to see in a true action movie from the Hero at his weakest to his strongest. Typically, action movies aren't awarded Oscars because the character development is poor. Most of the characters die before you really get to know them in some of the films we see. In this film, Arnold accomplishes character development as well as action in the same movie. Although, some of the characters are stereotypical gangsters, his interaction with them helps solidify their presence in the movie. The movie does rank in the same category as Commando but if you love <more>
watching his movies, then this one should be a real treat!
A quintessential example of what not to do in a film, yet, very entertaining. (by wdaniels)
Raw Deal represents one of Schwarzenegger's finer works as he encapsulates the essence of a former FED gone town sheriff trying to infiltrate the Chicago mafia while sporting an Austrian accent. Not since Red Sonja and Hercules in New York have I been so awe-inspired by how a film such as this one can be approved for production. Nonetheless, the film proves with each viewing to be of paramount enjoyment as I am entertained by the clique lines, illogical plot, ridiculous action scenes and laughable acting. I am particularly moved by the graveyard scene in which Arnold so eloquently pleads <more>
to his best friend, "Harry, don't die. It's not ova. I get you ambulance." Tears came to my eyes instantly. I just hope that future film classes will exhibit Raw Deal as an example of, "what not to do in a film."
Lemme just Say Schwarzie has made some BAAAAD movies. Junior, Twins, Kindergarten Cop, Terminator II & III, Jingle All the Way. But there was a time when you knew if Arnold was in it people were gonna die. Lot's of people in lot's of ways. And that was good. If you are watching an Arnold movie expecting to see a brilliantly acted well crafted bit of film you should be hurt worse than the villains in his movies, but if you want to knock back a few and enjoy some death with bad one liners...there is one man who used to be there for you. If you are looking this movie up watch it, you <more>
won't be let down. If you are a pretentious theater or film geek, go slap yourself for looking up info on a Schwarzie flick.
This is a great film for what it purports to be. It's an action picture, but it also has curious storyline that keeps one interested in Joey P. Brenner's travails, and it's not all that predictable until the very end. Moreover, it does have a human element at times plus we see a still-massive Arnold sporting a wife-beater . Granted, Arnold doesn't have much depth of dialogue, but it's not Shakespeare. I don't understand why everyone else dislikes "Raw Deal" to such an intense degree, as one must first understand where it is coming from. It is a fun film, one <more>
of the few Schwarzenegger films that is a must-have on dvd.
"You should not drink and bake" - Arnold. Awesome movie quote! This is one of Arnold's first movies and is one of his best. He has to go undercover to bust up a mob family. This movie gave Arnold the awesome kick ass image that he has, and has portrayed in movie after movie since this film. This is the original Arnold after his Conan movies. Robert Davi is awesome playing the bad guy and Arnold's nemesis. This movie has some excellent action and a great plot. Buy it.
Fine vintage Arnie (by caa821)
I just happened upon this flick on a weekend evening on one of our local channels. After a few minutes, I realized we'd rented it several years ago, probably 10 years ago, but I must have been preoccupied or tired then, because I just recognized it piecemeal this time.Several of the others here have described in detail the characters, plot, etc., and I agree it's one of Arnie's films with superior acting all around, and also does seem a bit lower-budgeted than his others in this genre.**Possible spoiler although hard to "spoil" one of Arnie's >**Humorous <more>
one-liners abound, but the real "pure Arnold" hi-jinks towards the end are among his best of course he's whacked the hell of multiple attackers a few times earlier .In the climax, he drives a convertible in the gravel pit hideout, money-counting property of the Chicago don, over very rough terrain it IS a gravel pit steering with one hand and picking off about a dozen marksmen, situated high and low, steadily aiming weapons at him with both hands. He has an automatic, rapid-fire machine pistol, which in his hands seems to have no recoil, and misses nothing even having only one hand with which to fire, and with the auto bouncing like mechanical bull at Gilley's. Two of the henchmen, however, sandwiched his car between their two giant trucks with end loaders; he had become dazed, but managed to exit the vehicle just before it was crushed into about two cubic feet of metal, quickly dispatched the two drivers, entered the money-counting lair and dispatched the few remaining bad guys, and picked-up a large quantity of the ill-gotten gains for the good gal who'd aided him in his endeavors.Got old job back with FBI, Chicago mob disabled, baby now on the way, problems solved. This feat was only equaled later in "True Lies," where he dispatched several men on skis and high-powered snowmobiles, with heavy gear and weaponry, in Switzerland, while sliding down an icy embankment on his back, in his tux and patent leather shoes.
Raw Deal? Don't mess with Schwarzenegger..!! (by smiley-32)
I got this on video.. Looks like it's totally uncut. But Schwarzenegger is at his best, since playing The Terminator.. In this film, he's brought down to earth as this former FBI agent turned Sheriff in a small North Carolina town..When an old friend's son of his get shot.. Schwarzenegger's character Kaminski decides to take the job in revenge of his friend's son. This leads him into the underworld of the crime bosses who are at each other's throat. On one side, you got Luigi Patrovita played by the late Sam Wanamaker.. On the other, you've got Laminski played by <more>
Steven Hill.. Paul Shenar looked great as Paulo Rocca.. Man! I suppose anyone didn't want to mess with this guy..!As the film goes on, tension remains that Kaminski is determined to bring down Patrovita.. whatever the cost! The music score in this film sounded OK! John Irvin's direction really kind of hooked me from the moment the film started, right way round to it finished..Darren McGavin gave a good performance as Harry Shannon.. Although his character wanted to do what was best for his son.. Give 'em hell! or according to Kaminski.. 'Do what an old friend told me to do.. knock 'em dead!'Robert Davi.. The cool, sophisticated, suave looking heavy Max Keller.. He played this character very well. It seems that when you see Robert Davi in character.. He plays one of those mean tough looking characters that you don't want to mess with..All-in-all, the film lives up to its title.. Schwarzenegger certainly did his job by taking down the bad guys, no matter what! Finally, I forgot to mention Kathryn Harrold.. She looks stunning in the film! Shame Kaminski couldn't go any further..A good action film.. 8 out of 10!
This is a typical Ahnold picture of the 80's. While it has serious plot holes, it is thoroughly enjoyable if you are a fan of Arnold the actor. Also, some of his best one-liners are here and if for nothing else, the movie is worth the watch because of them.Arnold is a sheriff of a small town. Evidently at one time or other in the past he was an FBI/CIA agent. For some reason unknown to the viewer it's never mentioned exactly why he had to go 'underground.' It's apparent his wife was not happy with him being just a sheriff -- she has become an alcoholic and is abusive <more>
with food. She throws a cake at him in a scene where he gets home from work. During this comes one of his most bizarre lines of any movie he has ever been in: 'You should not drink and bake.' At any rate, he is called back for a mission from one of his old friends to bring down some mobsters. He fakes his death still not sure why he had to go to this extreme but what the hey and takes on a new identity: Joey P. Brenner. He gets in with the mob, meets a high-priced lady who evidently has been running with the mob a bit and eventually wins in the end.As I said, this movie is not Arnold's greatest work but is worth the watch if you are up late at night, have nothing to do on a weekend afternoon, or you just would like to see a generally entertaining video from the video store. I must give it an 8 out of 10.
One to watch as a comedy rather than an action movie (by Corky1984)
Raw Deal would have been utter rubbish had Arnie not made an appearance as the lead. The plot is very simple and best ignored. Raw Deal is really a selection of action comedy sketches in which Arnie kills plenty of people before making some quips! The end is superb and very very funny. Arnie finds an open-top car and starts playin Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones on the tape player at full blast. This is to announce his arrival at a quarry where he drives around shooting everyone and anyone, often from very long range, before heading off to the badguys HQ at a nightclub. Of course he then <more>
annihilates the lot of 'em with machine gun fire! My fave line is when, in the aftermath, he turns to the last survivor, an old enemy, and says without any irony, 'Look what you have done'! Other great moments involve Arnie's very loud and extremely fake snoaring, and his suggestion to his wife that 'You should not drink and bake'. Sound advice there Arnie! Those with a keen eye will also notice that Jesus appears in the credits! Quite unexpected that one.......
