As an avid movie go-er I was looking forward to seeing Pompeii- and was not disappointed. Many will say it was messy, going back and forth to a love story to a Gladiator themed movie, however it is just what this movie needed. Many are comparing Pompeii to Titanic, while the only similar aspect is a tragic love story. Before seeing this movie, be prepared for both story lines. I did not see the film in IMAX or 3D but I believe it did not take away from my experience. The CGI was flawless, I found myself on the edge of my seat for the majority of the movie. The casting was for the most part <more>
exceptional. Kit Harington is finding himself as an actor as he takes on a major lead role. I could see him doing more of these early BC/AC films as it is clearly his forte. He makes an awesome team with Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. Their on screen friendly relationship has to be one of my favorites. Adewale's character stands out and easily becomes a fan favorite. Emily Browning as the lead female, I have to be honest. Her acting was fairly emotionless and I found it to be annoying at times, the expressions she made drove me crazy. Keifer Sutherland, amazing actor but not the role for him. He doesn't in the least bit even look Roman and his acting was very dry in this film. As for the story, you will find yourself captivated and intrigued there is no way you'd be able to walk out of the theater. I give Pompeii a 7/10. There were aspects I think could have been done better but overall very entertaining. The audience clapped at the end and several times during the film which makes it fun. I say give this film a fair shot and don't listen to the Titanic comparers.
Good Movie... I will suggest go watch at least once.. Direction is good, Director tried his best to show case reality of Pompeii on big screen. Dialogues are good. *****10/10**** from my side. I do'not write reviews but for a super work I won't mind. I created this IMDb account just to write review for this awesome movie. Go for it guys, Go watch it once.I Checked Wikipedia for details of Pompeii, Its awesome how director showcased all the things in 1 hour 35 minutes.Screenplays are good. People were applauding on dialogs like "Gladiators don't beg". No second thought on <more>
this one.. If i can i would definitely go watch it again.
Fun and entertaining, awesome effects! (by kimlabrecht-988-945805)
Obviously, I greatly enjoyed this movie. Other reviewers have tanked it for historical inaccuracy, weak writing and acting. All the creators did was insert a fictional, believable love story in a historical setting. The writing and acting were good and convincing, but not Oscar-worthy. The action scene choreography and cinematography were stellar. The special effects appeared natural versus over-computerized, and really added to the suspense. Glimpses of the famous ashen corpses are included. The horsemanship and "6th sense" of those animals were delightful. I'd love watching it <more>
Best Movie I've see in a long TIME (by wesleywolf)
I'm disappointed to see all the negative comments that people are giving to this movie. I thought it was one of the greatest movies I've ever seen. The editing and graphics were AMAZING! The plot was involving romance and action that was simply keeping my butt on the edge of my seat and me staring up at the screen with a stupid grin. The reason why people give so much hate cause it doesn't follow "exactly" what happened at the actual Pompeii. I know it's obvious that there was no meteorite shower, hailing rocks, or a freaking tsunami lol, but it made the movie better <more>
than I ever imagined it'd be. The graphics of everyone running and exploding back and forth made it so realistic.Even before the apocalyptic event of the eruption, the movie was already great and fast paced with action. I already fell in love with it and then realized that the big thing that I was waiting for hasn't even happened yet. I'm not giving away the ending but I thought the ending was awesome as well, no cliff hangers.I know that it was unrealistic to the actual Pompeii but where does it say in the description, "Based on True Events" id say that if they did do exactly how it happened, where a big cloud of ash just came down in two minutes and buried everyone, then it'd be really boring. The apocalyptic part lasted at least the majority of the movie which was great!!So to conclude this, I have to disagree with all the hate and ask other viewers that this is actually one of the best movie out now and I totally recommend it to everyone. 9 out of 10 stars all the way!!
This was one of the best movies I have seen in years. I loved it! It has it all - action, suspense, romance, great special effects, etc. Just shows you can make a movie without sex and without cursing! I thought the actors did a great job. Didn't recognize many of them, but they were great. Story was realistic and interesting. One of those movies where you don't want it to end! Those giving it negative reviews - not sure what movie you went to see! I didn't see any of the "cliches" or negative aspects I have seen mentioned by others. Again, would recommend it to anyone <more>
except young children due to violence. Great movie!
Great movie, treated unfairly by the critics (by s-klose)
We can all agree that Paul W.S. Anderson has made a lot of really bad movies. I'm happy to report though, that this is the rare good one. It' a very capable period disaster movie with really, great effects. Typical for this kind of movie we spend the first half getting to know the characters and the second half with the disaster. The Story about the young boy who sees his family murdered by the power hungry Kiefer Sutherland don't ask me about his character name and grows up as a gladiator whilst falling in love with a woman of high class and influence that Sutherland is <more>
interested too. Even the story is interesting enough to make a good movie and when the disaster finally hits, you see amazing effects you haven't seen since "2012". Luckily Anderson didn't push his wife in this movie Mila Jojovic . I can wholeheartedly recommend this one.
An Actually Good Disaster Movie That's Not A Disaster (by alanclarke714)
Pompeii is directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, and centers around the character of Milo, who is a man that stands against the Roman empire after he is put into slavery and becomes a gladiator in Pompeii. He befriends a fellow gladiator and slave Atticus, who helps him fight back against Rome and also ventures to save Cassia, who is to be married to Senator Corvis, a corrupt official. The movie is actually not as bad as i thought it was going to be. Sure, it is still not an award-winning masterpiece like Gladiator, but for a CG-filled action-fest about Pompeii, it actually worked well. The visual <more>
effects were very good the effects that were made for 3D weren't as much , the musical score by Clinton Shorter was great echoing the greatness of Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven and even Game of Thrones , and Anderson's directing, i personally would say is his best here. Now, the acting, i have mixed feelings for. Emily Browning was good as Cassia nothing amazing , Kiefer Sutherland was great as an antagonist, and Kit Harrington was sadly not as good as he is in Game of Thrones, but still good. The show-stealer is Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Atticus, who is very similar to that of Djimon Hounsou in Gladiator, and for me, his performance brought tears.Pompeii is not a classic in any sort of way, but is one i would definitely see again and own when it's released on disc. I never would have thought this movie would be actually good, but i hope they have an extended cut for a disc release because they could have made the movie longer.
Many people are out there saying it's "historically inaccurate", it's "a remade of gladiator WITH A VOLCANO!" and a very cliché film. but I'm saying it is a really good movie on it's own, considering that this IS A DISASTER MOVIE. And in many aspects this is better than 2012, Volcano, or other movies like these. For starters, there is an actual plot to the movie before the volcano erupts. Other things I liked:The gladiatorial theme is well presented. You can see people who hate being a gladiator, people who are just waiting for their freedom, people who <more>
believe they are gods in the arena, and so on, and you can watch how the majority of Romans loved these shows, but some didn't. You can make yourself an idea of the weather of that theme. The romance is believable. I mean, it happens very fast, but it's not Disney's "Real Love" They are just two people who LIKE each other caught in the massive chaos of a volcano, not much more. the special effects are plain awesome! Not only the gigantic explosion and lava bombs, and tsunamis. Also the small things, like the views of the city in the background, and the aerial shots. The city was amazing. People complain "Pompeii is not a port city" Well, actually it WAS, but the eruption changed the shape of the coastline. And the fact that THAT city shown in the movie WAS Pompeii. They actually shoot in place and then recreated the city out of the remainings using CGI. So the grid shape, the walls and everything is in place just as it was 2000 years ago. Archaeologists have in fact praised the director for his recreation of the citythe volcano. It's the star of the movie without a doubt. It seems to have almost a personality. The way the eruption happened was very close to what actually happened. Some artistic liberties were made for the sake of entertaining. You won't be seeing any clichéd lava river because Mount Vesubius doesn't work that way.The ending. It was amazing. I can't spoil it for you, but making it in any other way would have damaged the quality of the film. The acting. It was really good for what I was expecting. Milo surprised me a lot, because I could really believe him as a lead man. The girl also. She seemed so plain in photos, but once the movie started I could say she nailed the part perfectly and was by no means just "miss fanservice", as girls in these kinds of movies tend to be. The real surprise was Atticus. The actor totally stealed the movie for himself in every scene, something that was perfect for an invicted champion in the peak of his gladiatorial career. What didn't I like? The fact that the other famous city in the vicinity of Vesubius Herculaeum, I think it's called wasn't showed in the aerial shots. I mean, obviously the movie would be to complicated if we include it in the plot, but an aerial cameo of this other city would have been a fine addition to the movie, and would have improved the accuracy of it.
If you want to see a historically accurate film about the eruption of the Vesuvius in 79 AD that destroyed Pompeii, then this is not the movie for you. If instead you want to see an entertaining sword and sandals picture, well, then you might enjoy this movie. Milo Kit Harrington is a Celtic warrior imprisoned by the Romans during the Invasion of Britain and turned into a slave. Having seen all his family killed by the invading Romans, he is thirsty for revenge. Slated to fight as a gladiator in Pompeii just before the explosion of the volcano, the unexpected events might make his dreams <more>
come true. This movie looks like an extended, lesser chapter of the TV series Spartacus. Kiefer Sutherland is a very good villain as a nasty power hungry Roman senator. Unfortunately, not the same can be said of the uncharismatic actor portraying Milo, the Orlando Bloom look alike Kit Harrington. His love interest, the Roman Cassia, played by Emily Browning, does not impress much. But Adewale Agbaje does a fine impression as Atticus, the African gladiator that becomes Milo's ally this character clearly mirrors Doctore in Spartacus, that was played by Peter Mensah .The fight scenes are fine, and so is the volcano explosion though the use of computer imagery is a bit obvious at times . The photography is sometimes too dark and murky.
