Intentionally Cheesy & Great Fun (by tlgardinerbr)
This is a really fun film that never takes itself seriously. It's obvious that everyone in this film is having a blast and it translates well to audience enjoyment. If you're looking for a funny movie that pays homage to the old-time monster films, you'd be hard pressed to find a better choice. Mike Mendez has done a great job and I hope he makes more just like this. The leads in this film are all hilarious and were probably helped by simply having a good time making this movie. Mike Mendez has hit one out of the park with "Big Ass Spider" and I'm glad I could be <more>
Loved this movie, it was hilarious and fun to watch with children around. Just loved the role that was played by Lombardo Boyar as security Jose and the exterminator Alex Greg Grunberg , which both made a great team specially Jose Lombardo Boyar was hilarious through out the whole movie. Truly liked the filming which was in the surrounding areas of the City of Los Angeles. I actually rented this movie six times before I purchased it several times as well to give away to friends and siblings.. We definitely have to give credit to the the director Mike Mendez and the producers of this <more>
Sci-fi Hilarious movie Wish we have many more of these movies out that are enjoyable and both children and parents can watch together.. I would like to congratulate the whole cast for an awesome job..you deserve the award that was given to you all for best movie on DVD, on Demand, etc..
My wife and I watched this movie Big Ass Spider last night Directed by Mike Mendez and written by Gregory Gieras. It had a great cast including Ray Wise, Greg Grunberg, Lin Shaye, Patrick Bauchau, Clare Kramer and many more. This movie was well written, well directed and great effects. We love spider movies and some we have seen was rather shoddy and looked like it was done with a home video camera. This movie is different. This one was very well filmed. We laughed all the way through this movie. I am looking forward to any other films Mike has done. I have seen a couple of his films in the <more>
past, The Covent and Gravedancers an both was great. This movie and the other two i have mentioned and saw is indeed a great addition to your video library
The plot was an old one BUT they did a great job of delivering up the gags with some fun comedic acting and cleverly disguised, old but funny lines... I enjoyed myself and this has become one of my new favorite campy movies.. Lomabardo Boyar Jose, the sidekick was hysterical and I found myself in big ass belly laughs almost every time he was on the screen. I've only seen him play serious roles before and was surprised at how good he is with comedy... If you're afraid of spiders, this one'll give you nightmares and the whole set up is incredibly creepy.. The next time I see a <more>
spider I just might jump a little higher after seeing this.. I saw someone else reviewing said there's not much gore but there is and it's the spider doing the slashing.. So worth the watch if you love creature features because the animation for the star of the show, the spider, was great..
This movie is f***ing awesome, the premise about an exterminator faces a big giant mutant spider is pretty cool. Alex the exterminator is awesome, he's funny, he knows a lot about facing bugs, him a facing a giant spider is pretty bad ass, but the spider he is facing is not normal, it's a mutant spider. The movie also make fun of clichés that happen in every creature flick, so yeah it knows it doesn't take it self seriously, over all this movie is awesome, and it's one of favorite movies of all time, so I do recommend you see this movie, the problem I have with it's a <more>
'SHARKNADO' ain't got nothing on this! (by Hellmant)
'BIG ASS SPIDER!': Four and a Half Stars Out of Five If Syfy network movies were this good I would love the Syfy network but I loath most of their films ! This science fiction B movie, or Z movie as some people like to call them which are films with lower qualities than B or C movies , is about a giant alien spider wreaking havoc on Los Angeles. It focuses on an exterminator and a hospital security guard who team up to try and stop it. It was directed by Mike Mendez who also directed the 2006 After Dark Horrorfest film 'THE GRAVEDANCERS' and written by Gregory Gieras <more>
who's written and directed several Z movies . It stars Greg Grunberg of 'ALIAS', 'LOST' and 'HEROES' fame , Lombardo Boyar, Ray Wise who also co-starred in the 2009 B sci-fi flick 'INFESTATION', which was about giant alien insects as well and Clare Kramer. Mendez supposedly just asked Facebook friends of his to play roles in the film; which also features cameos from Lin Shaye and Lloyd Kaufman! I found this monster flick to be immensely entertaining! Grunberg plays Alex Mathis, an exterminator who specializes in spiders that's bitten by one while helping a regular customer of his, named Mrs. Jefferson Shaye . He goes to the hospital to have his bite looked at and after hitting on an attractive nurse Alexis Knight , unsuccessfully, he's also very disappointed to see his bill. When an alarm is pulled and Alex hears a giant spider is on the loose in the hospital he agrees to exterminate it; in exchange for having his bill waived. A fast talking hospital security guard, named Jose Boyar , assists him but the two realize they're in over their heads when they learn that the giant spider is an alien science experiment 'gone wrong' and the military shows up to try and kill it.It looks and feels so much like a Syfy network flick except it's so much better made. The basic premise and plot devices are all the same as a Syfy movie but the jokes are so much funnier I couldn't believe how hilarious it is and the visuals and special effects are way cooler as well. Grunberg is always a likable actor, he's great in the lead for a change too, and Boyar is perfectly cast as his sidekick Ray Wise is always good as well . The buddy team element really works and the giant spider scenes are cool enough for this type of low budget movie . It also reminds me a little of the 1990 Frank Marshall classic 'ARACHNOPHOBIA'. 'SHARKNADO' ain't got nothing on this; it's a cult classic waiting to happen!Watch our movie review show 'MOVIE TALK' at: http://youtu.be/QyJ3WU3eIos
Just sit back and enjoy. Don't think, leave your brain in the cupboard and you will have your laughs now and then. This science-fiction comedy works due a few things. We do have an actually story and the acting is above mediocre. Not only that, there are serious parts involved, the army going out to destroy the spider and the funny part, a simple exterminator out to save the world with the help of his Mexican friend. The Mexican and the American alone works but both combined to rescue the world makes it even funnier. And of course when the Mexican is out for help you will have a great <more>
Mexican score. But not only that. The effects used for the spider are also above mediocre even as it is CGI. When the spider attacks and it do so in several ways, spitting acid, or making webs or just stabbing it's all dine in a rather gory way. It's not a Tucker and Dale vs Evil 2010 kind of comedy but it was indeed funny. And it moves on, there's never a moment that gets boring or whatsoever. Towards the end it's a bit of King Kong 1933 homage and even that works, by then it's just a no-brainer but it do works until the end. Stay tuned when the end credits are running, the end joke and score is great.Gore 1,5/5 Nudity 0/5 Effects 3/5 Story 3/5 Comedy 2,5/5
as i stated this flick was so much better then anticipated. if you've come this far, to the reviews, the title has obviously hooked you like it did me. I love big ass spider movies and this one was great. not only just for ridiculous giant spiderness but effects were way better then i thought they'd be. the acting was hilarious, so many jokes. i was quite literally laughing out loud for the whole movie. the corny jokes and buddy buddy between Alex and Jose was great. and on top of all that it had some very funny gore scenes. it seems like they had a lot of fun making the movie, which <more>
really comes through in the flick. if you enjoy giant bug movies or disaster flicks but feel like a more light-hearted, funny, and entertaining movie i absolutely would say this is the one for you.
Surprisingly fun movie with lots of subtle jokes (by siderite)
I had some expectations of this movie, based on the ridiculous title. It would have been low budget, formulaic, over the top, obvious. It was kind of like that, but also with a subtlety that was both incredibly funny and in good taste. The plot is simple: from Heroes to ... bug exterminator, Greg Grunberg is at the bottom of the barrel. He has no money, no girlfriend and his only quality is an imagined one: he can understand how bugs and vermin think. Suddenly he gets the chance to defeat a mutant spider, kiss the girl and get back to hero status. The references, the jokes, the script itself <more>
show that someone really had fun making this movie and I enjoyed that part tremendously. You don't need a big budget and known actors to make something cool and this film proves it. The fact that Ray Wise played the stick-in-the-ass major and Patrick Bauchau played the scientist was more tongue in cheek than actual casting strategy.Bottom line: I expected to fast forward through this film, instead I ended up watching every scene and enjoying it a lot. I love tongue in cheek films and I especially appreciate good scripts in this age of CGI and dumbed down stories. Perhaps the title hurt this film more than it helped, but it is, after all, terribly appropriate considering the ending, pardon the pun . Watch it, you might enjoy it as well.
